I'll add this information for SA P Platers, as there are bound to be a few more that will find this after I have written it. Provided they don't change the laws for P Platers. Current as of March 9, 2012.

SA P Platers including those on the Safer Drivers Agreement may drive a non-modified vehicle, a vehicle with six or less cylinders, non-turbod vehicles unless the vehicle requires a turbo system in order to maximise its fuel economy to meet emission requirements or it requires it to operate (diesel 4x4s etc).

However what SAPOL don't want us to know is a modification to EITHER the air intake system eg. pod filter system or to the exhaust system is legal and is exempt from the modification restrictions. However the conditions of this is that you can only do EITHER the air intake system OR the exhaust system but not both. The reason being is either modification will increase the efficiency of the engine and reduce emissions. Due to the extra in with air to the engine or the extra out from the engine there is no significant gain in power to the vehicle without both.
