The Gearbox & Diff thread

As most of you know, I've rebuilt a few gearboxes now :lol:

I've recently been searching for the cheapest source of bearings. I thought I did pretty well ordering a complete bearing kit for the US which ended up being $260 odd landed, until today. Full set of 4 shaft bearings & seals from the local bearing guy at Riverstone (lol) for 88 bucks! If anyones interested in part numbers, I can scan the receipt up later.

Can't see why not. Im going to visit him again tomorrow for diff bearings, but unfortunately I dont have an old wheel bearing to take with me to match up..

Well mate, to be honest, it would be easier to order the kit from the US lol

From the price in the top post ($88), I then forgot about the 2 diff bearings, which was another $55, then one of the shaft bearings didn't fit, only place to get the correct one from was Mitsubishi at $95, plus the 2 main oil seals @ $22 each.

All the penny pinching I tried to do by getting everything locally was pretty much pointless when you add in my time & fuel driving around getting all this stuff :lol:
Especially when that US kit is $260 landed, plus has a bunch of other seals that I didn't need at this stage.

So that kit has everything you need in it to rebuild it and how hard is the rebuild I am a apprentice mechanic so I'm pretty knowledgeable but as I work on euro luxury cars they are all autos so I have never got to do a gearbox rebuild

Yeah its got everything you need bar syncros. If you want the kit with the syncros you can get it from the same place, but its about $450.

Not overly hard to do, its a bit of make it up as you go along though as the manual is rubbish. Tells you that you need a special tool for every cog to press off :roll:

But speaking of pressing stuff off, you will need a press to do the job.

Ok, so Im trying collate a few gearbox part numbers to try & identifiy what diff comes in what box.
If I could get those of you that know your box & diff type to post up their gearbox number, that would be great!
The number is located on the bellhousing just above the clutch slave. It will always start with F5M42 as that is the gearbox type.

Example:

Ok, I have 3 boxes in my garage at the moment

F5M42 2-2R7A / AA5171 - 5 speed manual - standard full slip diff
F5M42 2-2R7A / TT1471 - 5 speed manual - standard full slip diff
F5M42 2-V7A6 / VA4906 - 5 speed manual - helical LSD

Feel free to copy & paste the list. I have a feeling the numbers in bold will be the identifying numbers judging by the above....

I checked my gearbox number and mine is:

F5M42 2-V7A6 XC3339

And by the way mines a 1999 GP Version R, 5 Speed Manual, if that helps in any way.
