I can't win!
Hi all
I'm sure some of you are aware of the struggles iv had with my steering/handling..
My Fto has come a long way, but I am still getting some steering wheel rattle over 90km/hr and I have no idea why.
This is what I have already covered in relation to steering/handling:
-refurbed steering rack
-replaced steering column
-4 new mags (they aren't buckled, got them checked)
-4 new tires
-3 new droplinks
-replaced rotors 6-8months ago with rda slotted.
-had several balances and alignments.
That's all I can think of, but I am still getting the shake (Gholdy can vouch for this)
Brainstorming time!!

^ wouldn't it shake during braking as well then?
And if not, has anyone got a spare set of rotors I can try for a day?

Re: I can't win!
Even if they're fairly new?
Maybe the rear rotors? But wouldn't that only shake when braking? I drive it like i stole an already stolen car sometimes but I don't get that problem...
The only time I had steering wheel shakes at high speeds was when my front tires had a flat spot.
Could be something bent in the suspension system?

Re: I can't win!
My suspension is on it's way out I reckon and I occasionally get noises when going over bumps from the front drivers side of the car, (not droplinks - already replaced)Gholdwayne wrote:Even if they're fairly new?

But would that cause the shake?
Edit: my old (useless) mechanic did say my control arm bracket was bent, now iv never heard of a contol arm bracket, but perhaps he meant something else?

Re: I can't win!
Hmm has anyone got a spare set of good rotors I can try for the day?
Would machining the rotors fix it? (I know you aren't meant to machine slotted rotors, but...)
And as for the other things, how would I check them?

Re: I can't win!
It could be your wheel bearings? I read somewhere on the forum someone had fairly bad condition wheel bearings causing the car to steer all over the place

Re: I can't win!
Wouldnt have thought it would be the chassis as if it was the problem, they would have most likely picked it up on the wheel alignment. Ive got rotors, but certainly not close.

Could be an egg on one of your tyres. I had one (and didn't know what it was) which caused the car to shake at specific speeds like over 80, etc.

I can't win!
Update: took it to a mechanic today, they said it was the spacers that go from the hub to the mags, apparently they didn't fit properly, one of the rears was missing and the front 2 were cracked. Have also been told that they haven't been able to find the right set anywhere..
Would this be causing the shake in everyone's opinion? And any ideas??

It would be a big part of it if they don't fit properly.

If they are sitting off centre they will cause a shake. Someone on the FTOOC has a set for sale if you are really stuck.bass_twitch wrote:Update: took it to a mechanic today, they said it was the spacers that go from the hub to the mags, apparently they didn't fit properly, one of the rears was missing and the front 2 were cracked. (I sometimes get the shakes in the car but it's usually just because I need the alcohol out of my system before I drive! Soon fixed after a few tinnies)

No I don't have spacers, I mean the middle bit of the hub...rock_it wrote:When will you kids learn that spacers aren't legal for a reason ...
Going to try jax this weekend - the mags came from a jax up the coast.
