Starting Trouble

Finally replaced the starter motor in the ute and all im getting is a click from the starter and a click under the dash somewhere (Battery charge is fine). Any suggestions as to what might be stopping it from trying to turn over?

i had a similar problem way WAYYYYYYYYYY back... i cant remember whether it was the starter motor was poked or the 80A fusable link...

i think from memory the starter had seized and it was producing about 5 'clicks' a second non stop when trying to turn the motor over

Starter just came out of the wreck I bought. Started it and drove it down to the shed before I removed it. So the starter is fine.

Either starter or battery really....

Check terminals for corrosion, check the starter line connection, give the starter a tap with a hammer, might be a sticky solenoid & yeah... check the 80amp fuesable link & the starter relay.

when i start my car from cold the first try it doesnt kick over

second try it clicks over then conks out

then third try it starts!

once its warm though it starts first go, brand new starter and battery so they can be ruled out.

what else could it be? i was thinking fuel pressure?

You've got an Emanage mate, it could be a bazillion things. Its almost impossible to get aftermarket computers to behave as politely as factory units.

Takes a good 3 goes of 10-15 secs each of cranking to get my car to fire... even then it splutters & coughs & fucks about for another few seconds before resuming a normal idle.

Cold starts are never your friend with aftermarket.. Experience the same with the GSR/Evo..

Bad we have made it better with a lot of time thrown at it..

Agree, it will be fuel and emanage related.

Are you still running stock injectors? Any fuel system changes?

yeah on the second time mine splutters then conks out

yeah still running stock injectors might have to get slightly bigger ones due to maxxing out
fuel pump still the same, changed fuel filter, aftermarket FPR, thats about it

eh well doesnt annoy me just puts a bit of strain on the battery

yeah i think im due for a touch up tune since ive changed the fuel filter and a few other little things,
hopefully around tax time

Even on a standard set up I had exactly the same thing with an aftermarket FPR, seemed like it took ages for the fuel system to get to its proper running pressure. I went back to standard and all was good again.

Yeah why did you upgrade the fpr? Even upgrading the pump it's not really necessary.

Any lights on the dash when you turn it?

Yes there is actually. It seems to turn off when I push the button on the keyring though (although I might be doing something wrong). Ill get another shot at it tomorrow, so hopefull will have better news then.

Did you convert this car at all dwayne?
perhaps immobiliser is no longer completely being disabled? (still one thing on)

It has a new engine. But then this is the 2nd one (the first was a dud but it did start)

Failed again. Gave the starter a tap with a hammer. Dont get anything other than a click when the key is turned. 80 Amp fuse seems to be fine. Am currently charging the battery, but I think its OK, so dont expect that to work. Interestingly, the dash lights are on even with the keys off. Not sure what that means.

thats a short in the acc circuit

Nup, it'll be a fried starter solenoid... arcing out.

Thats interesting, because it started the car it came out of the day before. Could something have caused it to fry or would it just be a coincidence.

Did you disconnect the battery when putting it in? Cause the short from a live reconnection can kill the solenoid if its weak.

And FYI, you can just swap the solenoid off the starter by itself. 2 big phillips head screws & the 12 nut on the wire on the back of it & she'll come off the starter.
