My car is giving out this squeaking sound when the engine is turn on. but as soon as i tap on the clutch (Not fully stepped), the sound is gone. The sound used to stop after a bit of driving, but now it keeps 'screaming' when i drive, had to tap the clutch all the time but afraid i might wear the clutch! One of my mate reckons is the timing belt. Any idea?
Stepping slightly on the clutch does not have an effect on any of the belts.
The clutch fork is attached to a bearing, when you press slightly on the clutch pedal, that bearing is pressed up against your clutch. My guess would be that, that bearing is worn out.
If this is the case, it is usually a good indicator that your clutch is also worn and should be replaced.
Alternately, it could be an early indicator of an oil leak from the crank shaft seal on the transmission side. To check for this, look under the car where the transmission meets the engine, check if there is oil in that area.
but really clutch is not related to drive belts directly but when engaged it does take load off engine. First thing is to inspect drive belts (alt and p/s) for wear and tension replace if required. Failing that most likely to next be thrust bearing but noise it not usually a squeal like a drive belt. The timing belt WILL NOT MAKE A SQUEALING NOISE
Yep, get someone to tighten your belts first up. Will take 10 minutes and cost penuts. If that does not fix the issue, id place a bet on the throw out bearing.
Dras i think you are right! just went to a mechanic. he said the sound came from the clutch bearing and its worn out.
Problem : he quoted me bearing replacement plus labour = 550AUD (needs a day of work)
Is this a reasonable price or he is trying to rip me off? (had no idea about pricing)
Or is there any place or anyone i can go to for cheaper price?
While you are there, it is well worth replacing the oil seal (http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m3b0s9p2645) and also the clutch if it is more than a few years old. If you do replace the clutch, the bearing is usually part of the clutch kit.
The labour component of this type job is so high that it is worth addressing all of the issues rather than having to revisit it in a few months.
Yeah it's a pain in the arse job cause you have to remove the gearbox completely, so there is a bit of labour involved. So yeah as suggested above anything else in that vicinity that hasn't been replaced in a few years it's worth doing at the same time.
The thing is i will have to let my FTO go in 2 months time(International student going back to my country for good). Will you guys replace everything just to have it for 2 months? unless i have a buyer willing to wait for 2 months and prefer to get everything done for.
But i will ask the mechanic to check the condition of the clutch then decide to replace?
