Gearbox problem: Reverse Gear

Post by Craig »

Hey guys
just curious if anyone else has had this problem..and the fix...
Happens only some times, where i cant select reverse gear.
But if i roll forward or backwards just abit it allows me to select reverse..
by the way its a manual....
So if anyone has had this problem and what they did to solve it... that would be awesome if you'd let me know
thanks in Advance

In mine, sometimes i can't select it, so i just cluth in, clutch out and it pops in... donno why...

I'm seriously thinking about putting some RedLine gearbox oil... cos i crunch my gears on a weekly basis... :?

Craig Mate! :o
Hows it goin!

Yeah, Same thing happened with me- more on Cold starts like early in the morn. But i think its a transmisson/gearbox problem that can occur on any manual car not only FTO's. ( not 100% sure)

But sorry mate this has been a useless post as i have no fix for it!!
:(

But yeah like boris said checking the Gearbox oil wouldnt hurt.
OH and whats the condition of your clutch? new? old?

Thanks for the replies guys :)
Its done 110,000km now... all the average 100,000km service done...except gearbox oil... so i might see if that does something...
ive never changed the clutch... i never do burn-outs and quick launchs.. so it's still gripping really well... i have wondered if they could be a reason... but i believe its the gearbox itself... just not lining up properly.. ?
If anyone else has this problem ect.. let me know
thanks again guys!

well as the reverse gear is a one-to-one gear, all manual cars can have this 'problem' if the cogs line up it aint gonna slip in, which is why a clutch-declutch usually means the cogs move a little and it slips in

(from the mouth of a gearbox guy when i was gettin my clutch problem diagnoses)

There is on an FTO gearbox =) it's in the workshop manual

Most cars don't bother, as you should be stationary when you go into reverse and double clutching should fix any issues there =P

Don't ask me why they put one in, someone might of wanted to be able to do 180 spins in a manual (laughs at the thought)

It's shared with 5th I believe.

Ummmm, honestly, I couldn't tell you. It should be in there somewhere as well.

There's a few of service manuals, some of them overlap =)

Hi guys, I think this is a thing with a lot of cars. My laser TX3 has a pretty big pressure plate for bitumen launches etc, and I usually can't get reverse when I first start it and used to cruch it all the time trying to force it in. Mechanic mates of mine suggested I move the gears around a little first, by say selecting first then trying reverse again. If that still doesn't work I double clutch and try again and now I can get it following these steps everytime without crunching.
