Anyone know what type of bulb will fit this connection?

Post by EscapingFate »

Ok so i went to get my HID's changed at Simons house...
AND low n behold... like always i hit an issue... the connection is not standard FTO connection, when they did compliance they removed the stock HID's and put in the halogens... and in turn changed the connection... >_>

nar thats a h1 bulb the h3 isnt as long and dosent have a stright end ( goes to the side with already attached wire )
but a h3 bulb would fit a h1 holder i think
see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H1_Lamp

when i had the corolla i had hb4 bulbs and changed to h1 and they had to rewire my whole system as one was positive return and the other was neg

Yeah it looks like bduffman is right, seems that is a H1 bulb.
If anyone is wondering, whoever complied the car seemed to have inserted a nifty adaptor plate which allowed the socket which would usually house a D2S bulb to take this H1 bulb. They also cut off the black wire and earthed it on the rim of the light chamber :? Wouldn't be able to see what other wiring changes they made without taking the bumper off and seeing what they did with the ballast.

So EscapingFate I guess you have two options, either buy a H1 HID kit, or a D2S HID kit. Personally I would still just get a D2S kit and remove the adaptor plate.

Either way, seeing as they have played around with the wires your best option is probably to have some fun taking the bumper off and rewiring in a new HID kit :D

call a auto electrican and ask if the h1 is the same curcit as the d2s cause if they have changed all that they may have changed the wiring ( i did on the corolla costed $400 to change it from neg return to positive return )

when i was trying to instal the new lights ( befor the rewire ) i could get 1 light working but not the 2nd light no matter how much i tryed

thought im the only one with this problem!!!! I have the same 2pieces sandwich plates to fit the H1, but i dont think mine usea H2S bulb as mine is a GPX. HOWEVER, i have tried from H3, H4, H7 and non of them will fit.

im have no choice but keep using H1 but it is not designed for the projector lamp. It might fit with their two sandwich plates but the beam will go all wrong and will not be bright enough to light the road.

Hmm..i might get D@s bulb and give it a try.

Doesn't matter if yours is a GPX or whatever, it matters more what year model it is. On facelift models, HID's were at least a factory option, so given what you have said and as you seem to have a facelift FTO it's quite likely you once had HID's as well, only to also have them removed during compliance.

Open up your light chamber again, take out the adaptor and look inside to see if the tabs match up with the square and rounded ones in this pic.

However, we still don't know what they do with the wiring to make the H1 bulbs work, so there could be any amount of wiring work required to actually get it all connected up and working again.
Either way, you guys are not just going to be able to buy a D2S bulb, plug it in, and get it all working as you no longer have the right socket or wiring.

I may be off the mark, but can see three possible scenarios;
1(Best Case) - They are using the red power cable from the ballast to power the halogen bulb (not sure if that is possible),and have just earthed the black wire, so effectively all the wiring is still the same.
This would meant that you would merely need to buy a D2S bulb, and a DS2 socket/harness like the one below and solder this on to the the stock wires.

This assumes the stock ballast is still connected and working properly.

2) They have bypassed the ballast, but all the wiring up to the ballast is still the same.
In this case best option would be to buy a whole D2S HID kit including a new ballast. The only slightly shonky part of this would be the need to solder (or however you prefer) the wires from the ballast to the car power as the OEM power connector does not fit up to any HID kits. To mount the new ballast in the factory holder and to make life easier you would want to remove the front bumper and take the lights out for this option.

3) (Worst case) They have made changes to the wiring relays further back in the system in which case probably only a sparky could figure out what is going on.

Good pic! That is exactly the same setup EscapingFate has.

I can see there behind the adaptor plate that you definitely have the right tabs for the D2S bulb.

Man that is a shonky adaptor plate lol.

hey evoman, you sure D2S will fit my projector? and not D2Y or anything else?

I previously bought a HID kit from a GB and but the bulb was 9006. I will simply buy D2S bulb with harness and swap it and see if it works.
