Dull Dash Gauges

The FTO i just brought has very dull dash gauges,even turning the dimmer knob has no effect dimming or brightening.
I replaced the 5 brown covered bulbs with Blue LEDs,what ive found is the 2 outer bulbs on edge of the speedo and the tacho are either not working or the area to let the light through is blocked,i tried putting the leds in a few ways in case i had them in wrong,but still both these outer edges of my gauges dont illuminate,has any one else had this problem?,and can any one over some help,Id most appreciate it
