Fuel Gauge

Post by yotka »

Hi guys,
For my car, the dash(speedo/tacho part) was taken out recently, and placed back in again, the fuel gauge stops working after one day(needle at below E).

Is this a common ocurrence?

Oddly enough, it is working today!!

Ok, the days it work so far:

Day 0: Works
Day 1: Not working, refueled to full with additional 13litres and still not working.
Day 2: Works.

Will monitor it and see how it goes.

Some questions:

1> The fuel gauge stayed at the fuel level, even when the whole dash has been taken out. It doesn't drop back to under E?

2> When car engine is not running, does the fuel gauge stay at the fuel level all the time, and never drop to below E?

On the few times it doesn't work, I have noticed it only dropped to below E, after I turned the ignition key. So, from the above observations, it seemed to have been given an incorrect signal, when I start up the car.

edit: Or no signal, or shorted to another line, which gave it some other signal, are some of my guesses, assuming loose connection along with heat expansion.

Cheers.

the fuel gauge should always stay at current fuel level (it does not drop to E when car off or dash out)

Pull the lower section of your rear seat out (2 clips on underside of it) and unscrew the cover over the fuel tank.
On it is the plug that goes into the tank & carries the sender signal.
Try reseating that plug (seen below in white.)

Having said that, its probably gonna be the sender unit itself, in the tank... if its gets to that stage, let me know, I can tell you how to get at that.

do you have el dials fitted by any chance.
this happened to me when i fitted a set. the needle was slightly catching the dial and stopping it from giving it a reading. someday it worked .somedays it wouldnt. so stuck the dial firmly on to the fuel dial so its didnt touch the needle as all is good now.
