Replacement Engine

Post by MR2YEN »

Hey guys, how much would it cost in terms of labour to put in a new engine? Also any recommendations for mechanics that you guys have used/trust?

I called up Ichiban in Moorebank because i saw the thread which dstocks recommended them but they have sold all 3. They will call me when they have one coming over. $695 seems like a decent price.

All up how much would an engine transplant cost? including timing belt etc.

Well, I swapped mine over myself. Has everything on it you need. You just need to swap some bits off your old one (mivec cover, alternator, p/s pump, ac compressor). This is not uncommon though - all engine dismantlers do this. As to mileage, I didnt get figures on the 2 I bought, but they are bloody clean (you know how once you get oil on the engine, you can never get it out of all the dimples in the metal and in the corners again. Well, both of the ones I got were immaculate. I have put one in the blue car (last weekend) and no tappet noise (didnt adjust anything). So I would say very low mileage at a guess. Absolute bargain!!!

just remember when ordering a engine you will need to use your old gearbox other wise its a good chance your drive shafts wont fit ( not sure if you bought just the engine or engine/gearbox )

I can answer this as I have just got mine back with an engine from ichiban on advice from the good man dstocks.

It cost me a total of $1465 with new spark plugs and belts fitted and new oil and filter and thermostat and coolant.

The engine was very low ks in the vicinity of 90,000ks and runs like a dream.

Of course you can fit it yourself if you have the right equipment and time, but honestly I was very happy to pay someone
to do it for me :)

But some quotes from ridiculous places wanted even 4k to fit an engine!!!!!!

Oh and from memory the charge to deliver the engine straight to my mechanic was $185, thats very reasonable!

My advice would be to hunt around for a local small mechanic that will spend the time to do it right and for a decent price.

      Cheers.

Great job Clif :That's good to know the Ichiban have a good product that will keep a few more FTO on the road of recovery with low km engine's.
