Once again... another problem

Post by EscapingFate »

Story of my life... Another problem with my car.
I believe its my idle stepper.
I recently changed the shifter bracket i got from Dstocks in which i had to take out the battery to do.
I installed it and went for a hr or so drive to reset the system... and that worked fine... the next start up... but once the car warmed up... everytime i changed gears the revs would drop too rapidly and cut power to my car... and every time i come to a stop at the lights same problem... No issues when the car is running cold... but once it warms up bam problems begin... any ideas as to what it is if its not the idle stepper?

if it runs fine but only craps up upon stopping, then the first thing that comes to mind is the stepper... Visit pick n payless wreckers and look for a galant hj with the 6a12. It will look like a mirrored GR engine(timing belt on the right side, intake on the left) if the stepper is a black one, that means, it would not have been a stock one, but a replacement, which should be more reliable than the stock silver one with the tan plastic attached to it.

That was similar to my case.
My revs went fluctuating whenever i'm idling/lift-off my accelerator pedal.
But mine never stalls.

I had the stepper changed to the black plastic ones and it's all good now.

Check the wiring going into the stepper as well Cam, the green one in particular gets a bit brittle and can cause a poor connection. If thats all okay I'd get a new stepper rather than faff about wi a 2nd hand one.

That way at least you get a garantee and some piece of mind.

oh you need to clean the inside where the stepper motor in inserted. oh, might as well clean the thottle body as well becos its likely you will need to remove the intake pipe.

Stepper successfully changed... but its still doing it so i think it may be the wires... >_> and my stepper was a black one so it has already been replaced... >_>

Check for busted wires in the plug & also reset your ECU (ie disconnect the battery for 15 mins)

Then the car will need to relearn how to idle which will take a while. Go for a long drive.

Well the wires look fine... so it might just be the reset that it needs.

I am having this exact problem right now, did it end up being just the stepper motor?

Yep was just the stepper motor, You can try one of 2 things.

Take the stepper motor out, and degrease (I THINK thats what goldy used cant remember it was too long ago haha PM goldy and ask him what he used when he cleaned my stepper motor) it. Give it a nice little clean and put it back in, and run the car for a solid hour (may take longer may not) and you should be just fine.

Other option is to buy a new stepper motor or a 2nd hand one you want to get a black plastic one if your going to buy a new one those are the after market ones and seem to be the better ones than the original, I have a spare one from a HJ galant that fits just fine IF i can find it and you live close by i can put it in for you if u like.

Go for a long FAST drive - it doesn't help any more but is better fun ;)
