Fuel + Spark But No Fire

Post by Nacho »

I'm on the last hurdle of bringing my black FTO to life but the b*tch won't start.

I've tested plugs are sparking and they're getting nice and moist  so if this was an old skool car that would be enough to get it started. No error codes so nothing to go by. I guess there'd be a whole heap of reasons why a car won't start but anyone have any logical ideas......the engine was pulled out....head gasket replaced and put back in if that helps.

Time for some tech talk. Just wondering if anyone happens to know whether a full revolution of the crankshaft pulley (1 turn being from from mark to mark at TDC) brings the piston down and back up just once? Or twice?

If once......when you're doing the timing does, if the crankshaft mark is at TDC does it make any difference whether you're on the intake or exhaust stroke?

This is a 4 stoke engine and in 1 cycle the piston go down twice up twice
2 revolution The mark on crankshaft past tdc twice, the first time on tdc can be on whats call overlap both inlet and exhaust value open, the next rotation tbc is come up to compression. The best way to check which stroke you are on is to, take No 1 spark plug out rotate engine when it come up to compression air is forced out plug hole put a short length of garden hose down to plug set rotate engine untill air is coming out this is compression stroke the plug should spark just before tbc. I think this is not the problem,I think it is the imobiliser They are fair sh*t's of things.Disconnect battery start again.

Just checking If it cranking over and pop sound coming from engine (exhaust) and not starting it maybe firing on open values (overlap)Recheck timing.
You said you had spark .If it's the imobiliser there is no spark.

Thanks for the tech answer Stormhawk. Ok so let's have a look at this from another point of view.......

The crankshaft pulley only rotates the pistons which only have a basic function of up and down right? So when we look at the 4 cams, they control the valves, so assuming you line up all the cams they will be open/closed in the correct positions. So back to my original question, if the crankshaft pulley mark is at TDC, does that always mean that piston 1 will be at TDC?

It is cranking but can't seem to hear a popping sound from the exhaust.

Hi Nacho Still on go.The answer to your question is YES There is 2 tdc in a 4 stroke engine it turns over twice.
Ok The crank rotates 2 turns (pass tdc twice) to each camshaft turn 1 turns Thus the number of teeth on crank shaft is half the number on camshaft,
It is possible to be one turn out (on the wrong tdc ) but still on tdc (tdc is No 1 piston) Firing on open values (overlap inlet & exhaust values both slightly open When this happen the air fuel mixture ignite ,making poping sound in the exhaust instead of foring the piston down cylinder No power no go will not start.) You must have compression just before spark.
