nah only 2 issues to tackle, getting a 14 mm bolt out thats stripped in in a place where inly the open end of a spanner can reach it and waiting for my mechanic to come over and set the timing belt..... i guess all the valves closed when the cogs slipped........ ill leave that to him to find out
update: got 14mm bolt out by taking out the power steering pump from the bracket and smashing a socket on there(and it was still f**kin tight!
brand new water pump on ($120 from repco)with a bit of heatproof black silicone around both sides of the gasket.
going to try and get a timing belt kit by tuesday by ordering it express post off ebay (dayco) through a company called ultracheap ($202)
still have the issue of all 4 cam gears moving but because they all have only moved about 4-5 cms and i have marked all 4 cam gears, the harmonic balancer and 5 marks on the old belt it should all line up on the proviso that the cam gears moved 1/6th of a circle as opposed to 5/6ths of a circle.
either way the harmonic balancer hasnt been moved so all the marks should line up and i have a mechanic that works after hours who is going to have a look at it
obviously i will be turning over the motor with a ratchet and a bar before i start it
o yeah, to tension the timing belt when i put it on do i hold tension with the tensioner pulley by placing pins and placing tension whilst i do the bolt up?

If I was you I would not do any more on it and get a mechanic to do the job.
+1
Have you even read the manuals?

yes ive got them, and i have a mechanic thats going to help me, i live in a city with only 100,000 hicks in it about an hour and a half away from melb so if ya own an import ya work on it yaself coz no mechanic here will touch em really(not for jobs like this)
ive replaced a timing chain before, swapped motors in 3 cars and been offered a mechanics apprenticip so im not completly usless with a spanner.
bennoz has been helping me a little bit but it sounds like everyone else wouldent know how to open the bonnet......
hint: prove me wrong by actually being constructive LOL

sh*t we have been found out, we know stuff all about our cars and how to do things to them.
I said what I did above as it is a job that needs to be spot on when playing with the timing belt.
Bennoz wrote:Unbolt & remove the whole tensioner assembly when you pull the old belt off. It has a spring / hydraulically loaded arm that pushes its pulley onto the belt when operating. Lock it down into its lowest position & use a pin through the shaft to keep it there.
Get the belt on in the following order:
1. Round the crank pulley
2. Up around the water pump toward the front of the engine
3. From water pump, up over the front two cam pulleys (when in place cable tie the belt to the pulleys - 1 tie per pulley)
4. Drop off the 2nd front cam pulley & go down & around the idler pulley
5. Come up round the back of the idler pulley & go over the 2 rear cam pulleys (again, cable tie the belt to the pulleys)
6. From the rear of the 2 back cam pulleys, the belt will now head back down to the crank pulley, but loosely - as that was where your tensioner has come off & needs to be bolted back on.
Put the tensioner back in place, with the centre nut of the pulley loose. You'll need a set of 90 degree angled circlip pliers here - once you bolted the whole tensioner assembly in place, you need to rotate the eliptical centre section of the pulley in toward the front of the motor. There are 2 small holes in the centre of the pulley that will allow you to grip & turn it with the circlip pliers. As you twist the pulley in, the belt will tighten around it. Once you have it tight, continue to hold the pressure with the pliers & get your brother to quickly nip up the centre nut of the pulley. Then you can relax, all you have to do then is pull out the pin you used earlier to lock the shaft of the tensioner down. The tensioner will then release further, tightening the belt a little more. It wont tighten it hugely with the motor off, as its a oil operated hydraulic shaft & you wont get oil pressure with the motor off.
"Then you can relax, all you have to do then is pull out the pin you used earlier to lock the shaft of the tensioner down."
i just unbolted the bolt on the tensioner pulley, do u mean the hole in the middle? because theres actually 3 holes in it?

Nah, look very closely at the body of the tensioner. Just below where the shaft comes out & forces the pulley into the belt, there is a pin prick sized hole..
Just do yourelf a favour once you've got it all back together, pull all the plugs out & rotate the motor by hand (from the harmonic balance bolt) to make sure no valves are clipping pistons.

Or maybe there's a reason the rest of us don't want to help you. Maybe something to do with stupid comments like that

it was only in response from the comments i was receiving i8
yeah i was planning on that bennoz(think i said it in my essay length posts lol)
is there a chance the timing could still be wrong even if the valves dont hit the pistons? i assume they cant really be if all the marks line up.
brent88 wrote:is there a chance the timing could still be wrong even if the valves dont hit the pistons?
Yes one tooth out can cause major headaches but some people have said that when they pulled the engine a part again there had been no interference with the piston. 2 teeth out and I would believe it would be all over, red rover.

thanx i8, i know my motor hasnt moved and the marks are on everythng so hopefully it goes well.... worst case senario is that the motor will misfire on the proviso that i rotate the motor heaps of times by hand first
update: mechanic said just to line up the original timing marks on the harmonic balancer and the cam gears, so ill do that 2moro probably(woulda done it today but mechanic didnt come around till 6:30 because he was at work)
water pump dosent seem seized so i think it must have just been the gasket(obviously put the new 1 in anyway)
You need to move the crankshaft pulley anticlockwise 1 tooth, as when you apply tension to the belt it will move the timing marks.

update: engine running, no water leaks after refilled(lost it all when water pump got taken off) all sweet.
only spent an hour and a half 2night after work but just gonna leave it to the weekend when i have more time and do it slowly,
going to at the same time:
service the coil packs
replace the rear swaybar bushes
anything else good that anyone suggests while im having my own little diy day lol
so all the timing marks line up obviously, when the belt goes around the tensioner pulley when turning by hand it slips a little but hardly at all and when motor is going it spins well, the shaft sticks out of the tensioner about 3-4mm and the belt is about as tight as an the other belts in your car are so im pretty sure its the right tension.
i can adjust it if some1 knows its wrong?
anyway some ideas of little maintence things or any tips on what i have done so far and what i have to do will b appreciated
