Re: Wiring for my house
Do you have any budget constraint?
Also, what kind of net connection will you be connecting to?
Who will be your ISP?
Also, what hardware do you have presently?
Some ISPs have a preferred brand of router hardware, else customer support will be hell.
For your technical skill, their customer support will be your lifeline, assuming you are unable to troubleshoot.
Example, if you are with IINET, it is recommended for you to get their recommended hardware. Unfortunately they like Belkin, but as I am using it, I do not have any complains, for my particular model.

Re: Wiring for my house
ISP, try to go with iinet, better prices and plan and high reliability.
go ADSL2+ as well, and you can go Naked.
ADSL without a real POTS number.
VOIP connected phones are great and cheap. You will be re-using your old phones, but instead of plugging into the wall, you plug it into the router.
You can call Dstocks/Ben interstate and talk for hours, free!
Although, if you go with IINET, buy their Beilkin generation 2 VOIP routers. They come pre-configured with your password, so it is plug and play. Avoid BOB though.
Product page here: http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage. ... _Id=460610
Using something similiar, and no issues here.
Some recommendations on what you need, find somewhere cheaper if you can.
Switch: D-LINK DGS-1024D Price: $424.60 inclusive of freight nationwide
http://www.auspcmarket.com.au/index.php ... y_id]=1885
ADSL2+ with VOIP and router: Billion 7300G/7300N/7800NL/7800N Price: 89/119/129/162
From MSY. Look for your local branch: www.msy.com.au
They have Linksys models as well. MSY tend to have the best prices on PC stuff, but note, customer service is horrible.
Additionally, try and get a UPS for your network gear, in case the power went down, and you happen to have a VOIP house phone number. In any case, it is good to keep the network powered on, if the power is down.
You can still stream your stuff over the network on your laptop, etc.
A normal Standby type UPS with a good brand like APC should last you at least 2-3 years, and longer, with battery changes.
Preferably, get it from someplace local, as the batteries weigh a ton and freight will kill.
Some examples:
1> http://www.apcups.com.au/category/1627/apc-backups-cs
2> http://www.apcups.com.au/category/1628/apc-backups-es (easier to plug stuff in.)

Re: Wiring for my house
Yeah, thats just standard IT equipment width. Same width as rack rountable servers etc.
Main difference is my rack isn't deep enough to hold a server (which is fine because its only ever going to be comms gear in there)

Re: Wiring for my house
Anyone had any experience with these? Thoughts opinions. Main attraction is plug n play ability as I know nothing about setting up RAID

Re: Wiring for my house
Hey, the auspc link did not work, but u can search for the switch model instead. No POE. Needs cat 6 cables to work.
You do not really need to raid, as assuming u are streaming stuff from it, the speeds required will not be so high that you need a RAID array to keep up over the gigabit link.
A plain vanillla PC running winXP/Linux, rather than a Drosbo NAS might be better for you, as you can dump a few 2tb "green" hdds in and also use it to host/control your remote cameras.

Re: Wiring for my house
I have cat 6 cable throughout the whole house.
What would you need a RAID for?

Re: Wiring for my house
Raid is redundancy. Ie if a hard drive dies, you dont loose any data because its spanned across 2 or more drives.
