Its ridiculous now, I bought a 1.5TB the other day for $90 :|

And the exchange rate is only getting better, so parts will get cheaper againt towards the end of the year. They reckon it'll be 96USc to the Aus dollar by xmas.

Strangely enough, not even the governments ineptness can slow our economy at present. Mind you, they had a good crack at it with the mining tax..

believe it or not its because of the earthquake back home...

all the americans and euro's have invested in NZ buisness (mainly construction) and as a result the NZ dollar has grown
but the US and the EURO has fallen hugely so its not makin the aussie dollar look too bad

Ok question time.

I have wired the whole house cat 6 cable (2 ports to each room). Now I understand How I terminate the cables in the respective room but what about at where the router is. Do I just have 15 cables coming out of a hole in the gib board?

Whats the difference between a managed and unmanaged router.

Could I use this http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?mai ... s_id=14383

Whats the difference between a switch, a patch panel, a hub, and a router?

And all answers like you were talking to a mooron.....cause you are

You should just need a router and a switch.
Based on what you want, you do not need a managed switch.

A simple unmanaged switch + a router and you are done.

Patch panel is for changing your cable connection to another switch, etc.
It is more like a track changeover, if you understand that better, for trains to go a different route.

A hub is something like a switch, but way crappier, so do not use that.

edit: And yes, you can use something like that from PCcasegear. Will recommend Dlink though, over Asus, for network products.

edit2: I must be tired, missed so many parts of your questions. Plug all the 15 cables coming out into the switch. And then, 1 cable from the router to the switch. Note: Do not use the WAN port for this connection, if there is one on the router.

Why would someone want to do this?

And yes, you can use something like that from PCcasegear. Will recommend Dlink though, over Asus, for network products. Ok cool, but I would still need a switch with this? What would be the point of getting a 24 port router if it still needs to go to a switch?

Plug all the 15 cables coming out into the switch. Yeah I understand that but so I have the cables just coming out of a hole in the wall or do I use some sort of wall plate?

The cables run in to the back of the patch panel, you plug short cables from the front of the patch panel into the switch.
LED ALL the things.

Like so. All the wiring in the house is crimped onto the back of that patch panel running along the top.

Brands all down to personal preferences and budget.

Switch: Dlink
Router: Linksys / Billion (Assuming you connect to the net via ADSL2+, and these brands have the better ADSL modems built-in to router and firmware)

FFS this is impossible. I google 24 port switch and prices range from $100-$7000.

Come on guys need some help.

Is this overkill or exactly what I need?
