Wiring for my house
Instead of spamming up everyones else's thread I would keep all tidy.
Hey Ben, did you find time to do a wiring diagram on my floor plan?

Re: Wiring for my house
Quick and dirty:

Each room that you want internet/server access will need something like this faceplate (I think 4 sockets is overkill, 2 would be better):

A network cable would go from each socket, through the walls to a cupboard/garage. The cables would all be terminated into a patch panel like the top half of this picture and patch cables would go from that to the switch underneath:

You would have a phone line connected to the cupboard as well, so that you could put your modem in there and plug it into the switch.
I would also put a PC in the cupboard and connected to the switch with all my music and movies on it so you have access to them all from any room.
You would need a 24 port switch (or 3 x 8 port switches as they will be cheaper) which would leave you a few spare.

Cheers mate. One question though, why 2 cables to each room, what is the benefit of that?

Re: Wiring for my house
Each cable allows 1 pc to be connected to the main server/internet. If your only ever going to have a maximum of 1 computer in each room, then you'll only really need 1 patch cable running to that room. You can always run two patch cables if you want to be safe in case you do have 2 computers in the same room but its still probably overkill.I8A4RE wrote:Cheers mate. Re: Wiring for my house
Better to run extra cable now than realising that you want an extra computer in the room later and ripping a hole in the walls later to pass the cable through
You could get by with one, but it won't cost much more to run extra cable for redundancy at this stage of construction.
