Gutted

Post by Sweep »

Whilst removing the plenum to change the plugs & filter I heard somthing drop, couldant find what had dropped. Changed the plugs and filter put it back together started her up and you can hear the washer bouncing around between the top of the piston & the head.
must of dropped down one of the open ports before i covered them up.
I do not want to start it again as it seems the washer is just sitting on top of one of the pistons and I do not want to risk damaging the pistons.
My mechanical knowledge was stretched doing the plugs & filter so I would have no chance fixing it.
Havent found miself a job yet after moving from sydney to Qld so carnt afford to pay a mechanic to do it for me and I was useing the fto as transport.
I knew somthing had to go wrong sooner or later as I was really loving the fto. Thats the end of my sob story, not sure what to do now. :|

I pulled the plugs out of the first bank and one of the plugs is damaged you can see where the washer has hit it so atleast I know where it is and I do not have to toutch the rear bank.
I have no choice but to try to tackle this myself.
I was hopeing someone maybe able to help me out with a step by step guide for dummies  on how to pull off the head and any gaskets or anything like that I may need?
Still gutted but I am seeing light at the end now.
thanks

Thats no good at all mate.

How long did you have it running for with it in there? Any more than a couple of minutes can be terminal.

Before you go trying to pull the head off, remove the intake manifold & go buy on of those bendy magnetic wands. The only way to get it out will be down the intake hole where it fell in... and hope that its not currently wedged under a valve.

I had the motor running for five seconds max on two seprate times I did not hear any crunching just the washer bouncing around.
I could barely get a thin wire down the intake so not sure how id go with the flexy magnet thingy, I do have one here but its heaps to big to fit down.
So I recon all I can do is head off!

Yeah but even if you are lucky enough to get the washer out there will definitly be more damage.

What type of car you got?

ok you need to remove rocker cover also
from there also remove bottom part of plenum and you should be able to down ports where valves sit and maybe remove washer from there

faiing that try removeing headers and you may be able to get it out that way.

Just hope you havent done any damage like bent valve etc

Ok ive been onto this since 6am I have a quick question how is the removal of the rocker cover going to help sorry noob question?
I removed the injectors and the lower plenum 8O only trouble is that the vaulves are pretty much closed is their any way of opening these manually? Or should I go onto removing the headers but im probably going to run into the same problem their?
Thanks
ps the valves look straight

On further inspection it looks like the valves are in the down position, open and I cannot get to it and when they come up the close off.
It looks like its going to be the same issue if i go in through the manifolds.
Ive got no chance of taking the head off looking at the timming belt which also needs to come off I have no clue, Im going to end up screwing things up if continue.
So I recon I have two choices let it sit their until I can afford to pay a mechanic to repair which could cost a couple of grand, or sell it off cheap like it is and buy myself a cheap run about.
No good :?

lol Im sure I would be able to scrape up for some cash to put towards the boat fund :D
Its just such a shame I have no local mechanics around here who would even consider working on a import.
Everyone ive spoken to keeps on telling me to buy a different car :x
