General FTO issues

Post by droo »

hope no one minds me questions:
I'm wanting to know if there are any general faults with FTO's.

I come from a suzuki swift background also, and for eg, the swift GTi's main issues is it can have gear box issues with its second gear. (its also the heaviest used gear for city driving and gunning hard..) the Swift in general has rattles that popup after you've done 70,000km and they get louder. :(

Are their suspension issues/ gearbox/engine/ electrical etc?

I'm aware of the aircon issues and powerwindows.. are there any others?

most cars these days if they still have their stock suspension its pretty worn out as they're all getting up around the 80k mark

Engine:
CAM seals start to leak at about 80k, no biggie just makes a mess. They are expensive to replace on their own, and a lot cheap to do as part of major service at 100k

Gear Box:
Manuals can have 2nd gear issues depends on how they are treated

most tips are in good condition, however gear box oil often people forget to replace

i know the merrits of gear box oil replacements.. :-) done one on me GTi recently, and it felt much better to drive afterwards! (first change in 80,000km)

what are the issues with an FTO gear box in second gear?
do you get crunching going INTO/OUT of gears? does it pop out of that gear?

is there any method (or shop for that matter) that can do repairs OR reinforcements?

GTi gearbox repairs are in the 1000-1200$ price bracket 8O but if it needs to be done, then yeah...

is it the typical method of bad driving skill that damages the second gear?
ie, not clutching in all the way/ gunning hard and flat shifting in/out of it? etc/

is there anyway one can easily identify a suspect bad gearbox bya test drive? or will the problem be obvious?
