Hey all,
I have fitted a K&N filter into the stock box and am getting the rest or the piping done soon. The section from the box to the throttle bottle, theres something right next to the box, what is it? My car is a GX and I want to know why its there (GPX dont have them?), can it be removed or does it have to stay? It just looks fairly restrictive if I upgrade the rest or the piping in and out of the airbox.
Thanks!

maf sensor, fairly crucial to the car running right. Its a sensor that determines air going in to help the ecu calculate fuel/air mixture.
Air changes with temperature and pressure and this reads those variables.

Re: Q about the air intake
Nice, thanks CM.
When I replaced the air filter I saw its fairly narrow and the air goes through small holes rather than the total diameter of the piping. Can that part of small holes be taken out to increase air intake? (Hopefully you get what I mean, unsure what to call it!)

Re: Q about the air intake
Unfortunately not. That honeycomb mesh, straightens the air coming through it which allows a much more accurate reading of air. The MAF basically works by reading flucuations of the air movement, so it has to be relatively straight to read correct.
If you remove it, you create vortexes which can confuse the ecu and cause erratic fueling.
I replaced my air box with a ful K&N apollo CAI system and used this adapter to connect to the MAF.

Re: Q about the air intake
Interesting, sorry one more Q but thanks for enlighting me.
Is it still worth upgrading the piping between the airbox and throttlebody then? I guess it does look restrictive (some of those bends are tight!) but does the MAF sensor restrict it that much thats it not really worth doing? I will defiantly do the piping into the airbox though.

Definitely worth doing IMO.StraydoG wrote:Interesting, sorry one more Q but thanks for enlighting me.

Agree ^^^^^^ no point in only doing 1/2 the job.
