Supercharged LS7 in an FTO

Post by fraz91 »

Okay... so while sitting in my Engineering Practice and Preview lecture, it dawned on me that in about 5 or 6 years, i'll be able to sign off on engineers certificates for cars (hopefully)...

so, was wondering the feasibility of shoe-horning an HSV LS7 V8 (possibly supercharged) into an FTO and converting it to RWD only...

I know there's a company that send out conversion kits for the Mazda MX5/Miata to get a chevy LS2 (i think thats it... pretty sure its the 5.7L) into one of those...

SO... my main questions are:

Would it be feasible?
(Roughly) How much would it cost?
Is it worth doing if the above criteria are met?

any input would be awesome guys, thanks :D
I'll have an FTO one day... i swear!

until then:
1. 2001 Merc-Benz A160 (porta-loo on wheels)
2. 2007 Peugeot 307 TDi (more fun than you'd expect)
3. 2009 Mitsubishi Triton Di-D (a monster in its own right)
4. 1992 Nissan NX Coupe (club car and project car)
5. 1996 Holden SB Barina - "The Nugget"
6. 1996 Jeep XJ Cherokee Sport - The Budget Build
7. 2010 Toyota Landcruiser 76 Series - V8 Goodness... - Build coming soon.
8. 1990 Audi 90 manual - The delightfully dignified daily driver

Well over all I think it would be cheeper to just get the HSV
As for would it be feasible maybe, maybe not. It comes down to what you will use the car for after you do it, That is if you do and can do it that is!

it would be mainly for showboating and racing... (maybe a couple of sponsors to help?)

how much bigger than the FTO's engine bay is that of the Miata... because you can fit an LS7 in one of them and if they're similar size then (technically) it would be possible... there is the problem of the trans-tunnel though :?

you're not throwing enough money at it then!

best conversions for FTOs

4g63, evo 5+
6g74, diamante
6g75, 380
6a13tt, e5 series
6a12tt, hj series

anything more and you're seriously wasting funds and hand skin.

You forgot the 6g75 tt from the gto.

@franz91 seriously dude dont bother with a v8 in a fto ,why dont you sell it and buy a supra and put a 1uzfe v8 and twin turbocharge it.

As always, its feasible but highly difficult due to the custom work required becoming an ever-growing pit you'll be throwing your money in.

No hes not. He said BEST conversion not POSSIBLE.

The 6g75 is a heavy pig and shoe horning into a fto engine bay would a nightmare and a waste ot time and money, when you can easily slot a 4g63 in

Fraz, it is definitly possible HOWEVER it would cost nothing short of 30K. My guess would be more like 50k mark.

If you have that sort of money we can talk further if not thread locked lol

Well ok then but on his list he put 6g75 380 , i dont see a 3.8ltr v6 fitting in a fto engine bay.

Fraz the rwd conversion is possible but you would have to cut up the firewall for the 5.7,however width wise i dunno.A 4lt lexus v8 would be a better option.
I have seen a modified st185 celica with rwd and this motor on youtube .

it is possible to 'shoehorn' in the 6g75
whether the Eclipse is a wider engine bay I know it's a slighly wider car in general.
But I do know of 3kgt motors going into those, and they are next to the same motor...

It sounds like you could almost answer allllll of your own questions for feasability being an engineering student or at least interested in it whether you can/cant answer it at the moment. If Mx5 gear is small enough and the ls2 fits in a mx5 i cant see why it wont roughly fit in a fto. But i dont know all the fine details...Although i can't see how much finer details would cost, but i don't think they go up equaly in bulls**t with imagination and...great happiness for power.

You've got or will have an engineering cert... you need one of those if you're welding rear floor pans, which you'll need for a rear diff... if you can weld you've saved a bit of money there, and with the cert labour...

Three things:
1. I don't think you can certify your own stuff

2. You’re under estimating the process as to how one gains the qualifications to certify vehicle re-engineering (its not just about getting the degree)

3. If you manage to get through the above then you will realise that in certifying something, you are putting your name to it. And its not just a matter of an engineer taking your car for a flick, they have stringent processes about which they check the work... so if you cut corners to pass your own work, you will be risking your job and livelihood if anything was to go wrong latter down the track.

I guess what im trying to say here is, once you’ve gone through a five year degree and a couple of years of working as a graduate engineer, you will probably end up having too go about adr approving the same way as everyone else. But maybe if you can make some friends in the right places you can get it done cheaper... but the workmanship will still have to be there.

Reference: I’ve been looking into this for a long time ;)
