Unidling stalling problems of Gholdwayne.

Reading other posts about a similar topic i decided to do some cleaning of the throttle body and/or stepper motor first as right now i am mostly sure that is the cause of my idle stalling problems.
Now, is there a guide somewhere here for taking off the throttle body? it might look straight forward and all but i need to know what to watch out for when removing it, eg things jumping out everywhere, or something falling into the engine bay if im not careful.

This stalling problem is driving me major nuts, the way it happened was, i was on a near empty tank of fuel, then went to bp then drove home, then after about an hour i decided visit harvey norman for desks, then started the car, then it dies, it could be a bad batch of fuel.
This is around the 2nd day after installing the headers so im thinking the guy stuffed something while installing them. Geez.

If car was running fine before the exhaust install and now its running crap. It is 99% of the time, something that he has done.

it was fine straight after the install though, then 2 days in after filling up, sht happened. bad batch of fuel? im pretty sure its the stepper motor or the bypass opening as i dont hear the sucking noise at the end when i shut the car anymore, or if i do, its faint. Im ready to take the throttle body off for cleaning, just need to know what i need to watch out for.

once you have pulled off your air pipe that connects to the throttle body it's just 4 bolts. The only thing to watch for is the gasket that goes in between the the TB and the intake plenium. Dont damage it and remember to put it back on.

sweet, thanks simon, but what about the cable attached to it? the throttle cable? is anything going to be a hassle to put back on with it?

Nope should be piece of piss. But if your unsure take as many pics as you can before starting, that way you will have a reference if you get into any trouble.

Simon is right but also make sure you remove TPS carefully as the little spring in it can go flying.
Also have to remove the water lines underneath and it also has 1x 12mm bolt at the rear holding it to bracket
also make sure he didnt remove the vacum lines and not reinstall them

would one typically remove the 'vacuum lines' for ease of header removal? whatever that is. lol

dont have to but depends on which way they did it so chances are high.

Its a small black line/tube that will go to TB

is it near the crank case? i think i saw that and it is connected, though i think its too far from the rear header anyway and they did it from underneath with a hoist.

Anyway, im going to wait till my next fill up, i just really think i have gas that had some water mixed with it(it was a rainyish day that day and maybe that particular bp servo had a problem somewhere) since the stalling started after i filled up. If that fails, then im going to go irrational and just go straight to buying a new stepper. I might test the wires on it's connector with one of those multimeters and find out how to test it.

Stepper is most likely your issue anyway

By checking power doesnt really tell you if its stuffed as even though it may have power its the unit that stuffs up

I see. I also found that by disconnecting the stepper for a few minutes then plugging it back in, it would kind of work again but after giving it a drive, it doesnt work properly again. Im just worried that if i do replace the stepper, the problem might still persist(like other people in other threads) since this one works sometimes and sometimes not. Also found that the revs drop down faster when i change gears so i always have to catch the gear with the clutch quicker every change to make it smooth so another thing which would point to the stepper not opening up the bypass, and i dont think it is gunk build up because if it is, then it would never idle at all, and i can get it to idle sometimes when i reconnect the stepper.

EDIT: by the way, i know we fto's have common stepper issues, but when does it commonly die? my car only has 9x,xxxk's on it and i got this and i checked olly's car which is about 15x,xxx and it looks like he still has the stock one(the brownish housing).

I dont think its about how many kms these things have.

Being an import they do tend to sit in car yards for a while not being driven . As with all mechanical things they work best and stay in good condition when used (parts moving). I dont think sitting for a few months does them any good

when did your suspected stepper problems start happening steve? what were the warnings? i think mine just happened suddenly though, and my fto is my daily(which i dont like doing).

Ehem.. wonder if someone in the area has a spare stepper.

So I ordered the $100 stepper from the bay for the hj galant 6a12. Should arrive tomorrow if the money clears today and they express ship it today. God fobid, this better work, it is driving me nuts for a small problem(that might turn out to be a big one). Was only convinced it is the stepper coz i dont hear the sucking noise when i switch off the engine, meaning the idle bypass is blocked according to my theory.

but with stepper motors, when you turn the key to ON, does it contract? removed my stepper to observe its actions and when i turn the key to on, i can sort of see it click but no major movement on it.
