TPS Issues. Sigh

Post by Valandis91 »

OK after being sick and annoyed of havingg the usual TPS error symptons i decided to have a crack at it today.
went and bought a multimeter and getting to those screws was a bitch!

stuck sewing pins in the two wires closest to the engine and spun it clockwise then gently turned anti clockwise and i couldnt get it to a point of 0. all the way clockwise it was 1.35ohms aand all the way anti clockwise was 0.8ohms

its meant to be set at 0 when there is no continuity correct?

i have all the symptons of the TPS fault symptons such as high idle when cold, almost stalls, actually when cold putting it from park to drive it stalls. or into reverse unless you slightly tap the accelerator. when warm its not so bad but it gets very close to stalling. even sometimes at the traffic lights it stalls. it seems to be running a bit rich at idle as well

i have also noticed in my maps around the same revs i get the erractic revs and when the engine almost cuts out then surges the spaz's at autocraft have advanced the ignition timing 15 degrees. from 0rpm up to 1500-2000rpm. should i try 0'ing this to see if it fixes it? i dont trust anything they did to my car

checked the error codes and i didnt get TPS last week. only got error code 62. could this also be the cause?

really need some help here as im getting this tuned soon but i need to sort out all these niggling issues!

sounds more like like stepper motor

but you still need a proper tune until that is done I think your best to just 'quick fix'

i dont think its stepper...

my issues have now become more emphasised since my little play...

sigh

when cruising along when u slightly touch the throttle the revs jump.

accelerating from stand still it surges just about stalls then surges again.

also tested out. in neutral if u hold it around 2500rpm the revs do the same thing and bounce without touching the throttle.

what the hell is this :(

help please

Where is the TPS sensor? I think i have something like that on my car, although no stalling. And i had the stepper motor changed for a new one a while ago. Revs going up and down and a high cold idle.

It at front of throttle body, little black box

Are you sure your getting spark/fuel

i adjusted the TPS the other way (clockwise) now its very smooth and no jumpy revs when you feather the throttle or when decelerating.

thee voltage is still a bit high as when its closed its at 1.09V when its meant to be 400mv-1v

will sort that out tomorrow. but now i have fluctuating idle issues...

sort out one problem find another,,,,

it goes from about 0rpm to 700rpm in neutral, park and in drive when at the lights.... im guessing the TPS was hiding the stepper motor issues?

and now the TPS is adjust correctly-ish its brought out the errors of the ISC.

i only tried this warm so itll be interesting to see how she starts cold in the morning.

could it simply need adjustment of tthe idle screw?

can someone give me some help?

i wanna definitely know if its the stepper or not.

could my tps not being set correctly cause this?

or my idle screw?

or is definitely stepper?

i wanna just get this sorted its frustrating me soooooooo much!!!!

Well my idle goes up and down but only when im turning and not completely stationary. When my Stepper Motor was dead it would go up and down even when the car was standing still... so perhaps its just the TPS?... thats my understanding anyway.

The idle screw only sets the warm idle speed (and the base cold idle speed with the stepper motor stepping up the rpm)

thats because when you turn with power steering it puts load on the engine so it increase\decrease revs to compensate

stepper
but before the adjustment in the tps it idle'd fine....
also getting error 62 which is the servo which controls the internal butterflies in the manifold. could it be that dying?

just need to make sure before i fork out $150 for a new stepper

but i guess it wont hurt.
might play around with the tps this weekend and test the stepper...

but my god its annoying and confusing

took to a random mechanic and he said that it sounds like at idle its not builiding up enough vacuum, also its normal for the throttle to be jerky prior to adjustment when feathering the throttle cos of the cams

also ive noticed lately it has been sucking a lot more air at idle of late.

The stepper is just for the cold idle right? What happens if you disconnect it when the car is fully warm? You might be able to see whether its the TSP then....

after contacting dave at rpw he advised me to set the voltage at idle at 0.67v which i have done.

it now idles fine. it hunts a teeny weeny bit but i think it needs a touch more fine tuning with the idle screw.

its a lot smoother in acceleration and seems to have a bit more kick.

also now during deceleration my wideband doesnt show im going fully lean. i.e 21.9+

so im guessing its problem solved!

might buy a stepper to have on hand just in case for future though.

cheapest place to get them from?

happy days

ok problem sorted. voltage for TPS must be between 0.56v and 0.62v at idle..

wasnt stepper at all.

everything runs good now.

was 0.56v before now 0.61v

have noticed doesnt jerk when applying light throttle but revs still bounce around 1.5k when decelerating...

but im now able to get it tuned :)

I've developed the same problem it seems, checked my ECU tonight and came up with TPS issue. Says its at 11.37%?

it was an error code that was stored in the ecu, a bloke from mitsubishi club checked my ecu last night.

i think the program was saying it was 11.37% open on idle, or something like that. i was a bit confused about it. we cleared the errors and the check engine light hasn't come on since, so i think it was just something that fixed itself?
