those new speed cameras?
well i think they are old but they are bringing them back in again
how do they work, where do they place them etc
ive heard they dont have to give you any signs to warn you about it when they set it up?
and that they will do it not only in police cars but in vans and on the side of the road?
will they be wearing uniform when they do it on the side of the road? will they only do it on busy roads or on backstreets as well, etc?
only thing ive heard about these is from word of mouth
so i dont know anything and i am quite interested in them

Re: those new speed cameras?
Canberra has been using the vans for several years now. Mostly on fairly busy roads. They do have to put signs up though (or at least they do). The sign says "Your speed has been checked" though, so its fair to say that by the time you see the sign its too late......

They are placed on the front of the vehicles
I'd say there wouldn't be any signs placed to warn you while approaching one
They will be mostly operated by contractors i believe, using unmarked cars, no police uniform
They will place them in locations where frequency of speeding is higher and where its difficult for police to use conventional methods.

so in other words they will be placed where they are likely to raise revenue rather than prevent speeding?

Re: those new speed cameras?
Yep, absolutely. In Canberra, officially the police came out and said they supported due to safety, but the word behind the scenes was that they were really dirty at the decision as they get booked as well and that it was pure revenue raising. Its done by independant contractors and they tend to use unmarked white vans as the cameras are fixed in the rear and are quite large. There is no need for uniforms as they never get out of the car. You dont get pulled over, you just get a pleasant message in the mail......

Re: those new speed cameras?
I'm pretty sure they have to put signs up. The thing is though most areas already have permanent signs up that say speed cameras are used in the area...

Re: those new speed cameras?
Cant confirm what NSW will do, but there arent signs before them in Canberra (or if they are its like 20m in front of the van) and they dont just do areas with the permanent signs im afraid

Re: those new speed cameras?
its all bullshit ay its all about money theses days they dont care about stoping the person that is speeding as long as he pays the fine
so do they take pictures of the car i thought it was ilegal for speed cameras to take photos of the front of your car , as in the past i believe there was a case some one was having a afair and the other partner asked for the photo and saw there partner with another person

The photos my mate got from the speed camera that got him were from the front so i don't think that is an issue.
At the same time though you couldn't see inside the car at all, just the outside clearly and the number plate.

Re: those new speed cameras?
The reason that they are bringing these in is because they were down $4m dollars worth of revenue last year by not catching people speeding.
The NSW Centre for Road Safety in consultation with NSW Police will determine the locations of the mobile cameras and the RTA will list their location on its website every three months.
The RTA will begin operating six cameras initially. A one-month grace period applies, during which motorists caught speeding by a mobile speed camera receive a warning and no infringement.

The new cameras zoom into the front of the car only. Also don't forget that red light cameras are being change to speed cameras as well so they will get you for running a red and speeding all at the same time.
As for needing to sign post the speed trap no they don't need too, as in NSW there are signs every where saying "speed cameras used in this area or used in NSW"
oh and most of them get the back of the car not the front due to the flash being so bright.

As was said by, I believe Simon in the past, and is simply spot on.
They fine you enough to hurt you, but not make it worth to detest it.
In the end, if they really cared about your speeding, you'd lose your license instantly.

i read about something like that happening in the autobahn in germany?

does this mean if we are speeding we will be caught by red light cameras?
or only if we are speeding + run a red at the same time?

isnt there some country where that happens?
i think it was switzerland or sweden? or some european country
and they didnt have much trouble with speeding because of it
not a bad policy imo
although if they did it in australia they would have to raise the speed limits, otherwise no1 would have a license
also will the cameras book anyone going over the speed limit
like if you are going 79km in a 70km zone most cops wont look twice at you
will this be the same with the speed cameras? are the meant to stop people from dangerously speeding or speeding all together?
if they are going to book everyone i reckon its bullshit
there are so many people who go 40-50km over the speed limit everywhere they go, that drive like retarded f**cks .
Its like drink driving, ive had mates being pulled over the morning after a big night and got given sh*t for having a tinsy bit of alcohol in their system while being on the p's and i know mates who drive absolutely pissed every weekend and never get pulled over.
the police need to think about how to spend their time better than doing useless sh*t

Re: those new speed cameras?
I will check up on the speed/ red light camera to be 100%, but what I know at this point they are set up so if you put your foot down to beat the red light it will get you for speed.
They work via an infer red beem set up in the gutter of the road.
I will update the info as soon as I can.
Edit:- http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/roadsafety/sp ... index.html
the above is a link to some info for you. It is not 100% on if they will book you for both red light and speed
I will keep looking.

Re: those new speed cameras?
Thing is also.
My area used to be 60kph for roads, and 50kph for side streets.
As of Jan 1 this year, the entire area, minus the major road that leads to/ from the city, became 50kph.
Second to this, there was an announcement made recently that some western suburbs in NSW would be made 40kph zones.
Why?
Bicycles.................
Lame.
I have also heard through the grave vine as my family has a few local government ties, that the entire canada bay area (where I live) will be doing the same due to the increase of bicycle users.
The government is pretty much making people want to speed by the increasingly stringent measures to ensure road safety that is completely backward.
I could go on for hours bitching about how stupid their line of thinking is, but there's a reason I don't watch the news and listen to talk back radio.
I've better things to do. :rolls:

With the new "safety cameras" at traffic light junctions...
- If you speed through a green light, it will get you for speeding.
- If you go through a red light at or under the speed limit it will get you for a red light violation.
- If you speed through a red light, it will get you for both.
you only get 1 small warning sign for these buggers too.
Moral of the story, hit the anchors when you see the orange light and hope the person behind you does the same.

Re: those new speed cameras?
yea a mate got off his red light due to truck being up his ass and they could tell cause the truck went threw after
but as for safety cameras there bullshit to rta have them listed on there site to if you want to no where they r
safety cameras are smaller then red light cameras or speed cameras
but work just the same you will see the lines in the road like right after the 2nd white line
and the only notice you get is a tiny sign saying safety camera
good thing is brad here on the coast we dont have any yet

Re: those new speed cameras?
As I said befor these will work of infer red beams. They will not be using the old sencer pads/ lines in the road.
I know this as they have put one in right near my work.
Another way to put it:- it's set up like the staging lights at the drag strip.

"safety camera's" are the ones at the traffic lights..
And yes, they are a red light camera.. but they are 100% speed camera.. So the light does not have to be red for them to do you for speeding..
They have gone nuts with these cameras around the back of botany/mascot .. And now down the general homes drive or what ever it is when you turn off the Eastern Distributor heading towards the city ...
