Re: Australias shithouse internet
Oh and Ben, just start up your own small ISP.
Set up a T3 and run a fibre optic cable to your own house.
Then...
Set up an international spam network to fund the ISP and ta-the!
Free interwebz.
EDIT: I laughed that the "d.a" was auto-corrected to "the"
Aimed at any users in paticular?

Cant believe no one eles has suggested it.....Ipad
It is crazy powerful

CHRISTIANITY: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

Re: Australias shithouse internet
My mate in Parklea (like 1 suburb away from Acacia Gardens) was told by every ISP that the cables in his street would not permit him to get ADSL at all. The only option the ISPs could give him was 3G wireless.
Being an Acacia Gardens resident with 2 phone lines, I set up a second phone line for him and we have a 2.4 GHz wireless link via satellites on our roofs at the maximum legal power limit. The wireless is faster than the ADSL so he is pretty happy with the solution and we have not had 1 wireless dropout. (Bob from iinet on the other hand needs an occasional reboot).
Moral of the story, while ADSL speeds in Acacia Gardens aren't great, it could be worse if you lived 600m to the east in Parklea.

Re: Australias shithouse internet
Good god...
You'd think also, with the area growing as fast as it is (housing chunks going up daily) you'd seize a potential business goldmine.
Oh well, thanks Telstra.
Got a price on bonded DSL, add another $99 a month ontop of my existing monthly bill
Oh & Telstra reckon they can do me a cable connection! If I sign up for Foxtel.....

Why?Bennoz wrote:Scratch cable... can get Foxtel but no cable lol.
I had to go through Foxtel to have the cable run installed as back then somehow, our house was classed as a business.
So I booked in the cable to be installed, guy came out, realised paperwork was wrong, installed, we paid $100.
Rang up Telstra told them the 'residence' has a cable connection already in place, please come and install cable modem.
Done.
Years later we ended up with foxtel anyway.
Why can you not get cable, yet you can get foxtel?

Get access to a friend's ADSL2, string Cat6 and repeaters along the powerlines back to your house.
LED ALL the things.

Re: Australias shithouse internet
Just reading some intersting stats on the Whirlpool forums. Anyone here use Billion modems?
Was just reading a review (a f*cking 64 page review....g33ks) on the Billion 7800N unit.
Bloke is about the same distance from the exchange as me & with the Billion unit, went
from 2.2k connection with his WAG160N (Linksys same as mine) to over 3.3k...
Only $197 bucks from Cormain too...

you think thats bad, my gf lives in the richest place on the central coast and everywhere else on the coast gets better internet then her. shes only able to get telstra there. and there internet is constantly up and down. while i live in an average suburb on the coast, get average internet for someone who isnt living near sydney and it is constantly reliable. I think its been down for maybe 1-2 days over the last few years.

Are you going to give me a spin in your car now that you used what was clearly my excellent idea?evoman wrote:lol Also, have you tried a few different routers? I know some of the Billion items have a good rep for dealing with low quality line signals....so you could possibly gain a couple of hundred extra download kw's lol.

At my old place in the gong I borrowed a mates Billion 7402(i think) and got a gain of around 1Mb over the Dynalink one we had in the house. Was too cheap to be bothered to go and buy one though. Definitely good pieces of gear.
Just add a 6A13TT to the Billion and that should fix it all up real good.

The best I could pull down a torrent was 180-190k, just ripping one in now at 310k. Good times.
