Trouble Starting

Post by dstocks »

Having a little trouble starting one of the FTO's in the mornings. Takes about 20 seconds of cranking to kick it over. Once this has happened, I can turn off the car and itll start immediately. Also starts much quicker when the temperature is warmer. Has a brand new battery (heavy duty), brand new fuel filter. 3 brand new iridium plugs in the front bank, and have also swapped out the O2 sensor (for another one I had lying around). Oh and ive chucked in a bottle of injector cleaner into the fuel tank. None of these things has made a difference to this issue. Once the car is started, it runs beautifully. Its almost sounds as though it needs to drag the fuel all the way from the tank. Any thoughts?

sounds like a fuel pump bud, takes 20 seconds or so for the fuel pressure to rise then when you start it there after no problems cause the pressures already there : )..also your fuel filter when was the last time you changed it?

Now that I think about it it's the same problem I have, try a new fuel pump. I have been told that will fix my problems so it may work for yours as well.

Thanks all. Have got a fuel pump out of one of the wrecks. Will attempt to swap over on the weekend and see how it goes.

Could be a sticky relay? Why not try switching it with another one? Nothing to lose.

Ahhh, so ive got to drop the tank anyway then. Easier to just change the whole thing in that case. Was just being a lazy bastard. Shame it doesnt have the late model connectors on it. Then I could have just swapped it via the view panel under the rear seat.

Have you tried getting that nut undone. Must have tried it on about 5 different fuel pumps now. All I seem to manage to do is either turn the sides off the smaller nut or bend the crap out of the pipe that comes out of the fuel pump. I did give that a shot first on the replacement pump, but no luck. Cant even seem to undo it after ive removed the pump from the car. I think thats why in later models they changed the clip arrangement.
