Time to upgrade my phone
Ok, as the topic says it's time to upgrade my mobile phone.
I really want the HTC Desire but don't want to be locked in to Telstra. It's exclusive with them until October. It cost ~$780 outright.
I'm with Virgin and want to stay with them because of the free calls virgin to virgin and I just find their plans better for me.
The Sony X10 looks like a good phone too and is available with Virgin.
Really what I'm looking for in a phone are the following:
Google phone
Android 2.1 platform
GPS
Good camera
Good internet
Wi-Fi
Not bothered about music player but would be good to have radio
Bluetooth
NOT AN IPHONE.
Any suggestions? Will the HTC work on Virgins network? Are the apps available similar to the iphone?
Cheers.

Re: Time to upgrade my phone
My mate has the nexus one from google - I believe it's made by HTC - it's very nice phone.
I Like it a lot. -i believe it also has a app store similiar to an iphone and can get a lot of the same apps yes.
But I don't think it's officially released in Australia yet.

IMO sony ericsson make phones with the best cameras. Maybe an Xperia X10. 8.1 mega pix and android OS?

Re: Time to upgrade my phone
Yeah, the X10 looks good but isn't running android 2.1, although there is an update coming later in the year. I've been comparing phone reviews for a few hours and the Desire still looks like the one to beat. Although Samsung have the Galaxy S coming in a few months too. Likes like I'll stick with old faithful Nokia 6220 Classic for now until I can make my mind up.
Sorry, not selling my phone, it wouldn't be worth anything.

Yep, I've found most sony ericsson to make pretty decent cameras in their phones, probably thanks to their experiences with the sony digital camera range. They also have good media capabilities but i find their web integration and browsing a bit lacking. Nokia are decent for apps and reliability (had several nokia phones last for more than several years each). I personally have an I iphone which, other than its camera, I find to be a great all-rounder, keeps me organised, great web browsing, email, shitloads of apps and doubles as my ipod as well, obviously though its not for everyone and each have their own preferences.crimson236 wrote:IMO sony ericsson make phones with the best cameras. Haven't had any personal experience with the HTC range but have been hearing some good things about them. Will be a while before they get the same support as the iphone though. Maybe hang on for 1-2 months until the end of financial year sales comes around and phones go on special to make room for new models and what-not, good way to grab a bargain.

Hey Aza, nothing against them personally but it's the same reason I don't have a skyline or rexie, I like to be a little bit different, I don't want to follow the crowd.
Thanks Koolio, I think I will wait for the Desire to go on general release, I'm not in a massive hurry to upgrade just yet.

I thought the same thing about the iphone's, thought they were just the latest kids toy. But after looking around for a while they seemed to be the best buy ... its different to owning a riceline, its not like you have to wear the phone on your sleeve, it's just for u and your convinence

Re: Time to upgrade my phone
I have had my SE X10 for 1 week now.
It is a pretty tops phone. Just be aware that you will not be able to go more than about a day out of the battery (on the standard battery, there after market ones that are more powerful) and that the phone will never get multi-touch, if you can get past them I would say go for it.
Android 2.1 has been promised for September this year but honestly, after customizing my phone I think I will probably skip this update and wait for Android 2.2 which has significant performance increases over 2.1.
The X10 doesn't have a radio which I thought I would miss but I have been converted to just listening to pod casts which I am pretty happy with.

the HTC Diamond Touch is a competitor to the iPhone, my brother has one and he rates it pretty highly

Re: Time to upgrade my phone
Blackberry's have restrictive software, Ipods have restrictive software. I think your 2 choices are either Android, which is newer so it has less applications for it, or Windows Mobile which has been around longer, but you have to find your own apps rather than buy them from a marketplace/app store.
LED ALL the things.

Re: Time to upgrade my phone
We use these at work. They are good business phones with exchange support etc. however personally I'd go crazy using one. It's running on the Windows Mobile platform which is pretty dog slow compared to the Android and OSX on the iPhone.Tippin wrote:the HTC Diamond Touch is a competitor to the iPhone, my brother has one and he rates it pretty highly

What I would do? Either wait 2 months till the new iPhone comes out OR if you need it desperately the HTC Desire. It's an open sourced platform which is only going to continue getting better

Re: Time to upgrade my phone
I'll be getting the new iPhone. It's gonna be awesome.
It ticks all the boxes (except Android of course) and you can't go wrong with the amount of aftermarket support.
Will be announced on June 7, and rumour has it that it will start selling immediately...
