No power when accelerating??

Post by joelang86 »

Hi all. been having this issue for quite some time but i've pretty much just been living with it. thought i would finally start a thread and get some ideas. but pretty much my fto has NO power at all when accelerating. it is unbearably slow. even when i push the pedal down all the way, the engine and exhaust will roar like crazy but it will still travel as if i had the accelerator a quarter of the way in. and dont even get me started on hills. i will actually start to lose speed going up even the slightest of hills, even if i've got the accelerator in all the way. its actually getting quite annoying now especially on sections of the freeway where its inclined abit. i will be going 100 but then as im going up the hill it will slow down to about 80 and i will have all these people up my ass all of sudden. i actually hope that there is a slow car or truck in front of me, that way it gives me an excuse to be going so slow. the other day, for example, there were road works and i was over the moon lol. its also come to the point where sometimes i dont even bother with overtaking cars because it becomes such a mission.

so have any of you come across this problem or know what could be wrong? im not exactly auto literate either so it doesnt really help when it comes to diagnosing the problem. but for a 2 litre v6 im pretty certain its not meant to be this slow.

btw its an auto 95 gpx

thanks heaps and i look forward to your responses...

if the engine is still revving nd its in gear, but its not going probably the clutch is fried or wont fully engage.

It's a tip so I would take a stab and say the stallconverter maybe.

Are you driving on auto or on tip? I'm driving a 95 gpx auto as well and I find that if it's on auto it's just like any normal car on the road, it revs up to like 2000 rpm then it just switches to the next gear. IMO gear 4 is crap. If you want power going up slope, try tip mode and dropping to gear 2, that's where I get the most power out of it. Try driving on tip and see if it works. I could get to 100km/h just on gear 2. :D

If it's changing that low you need to run it in tip mode and give it a good thrash for about an hour so it remembers where you want it to change. Then when you have it in D it will chang the same way you would.

I tried trashing it awhile back but it doesn't seem to get the settings right. Doesn't really matter much though. Speed limit in Perth is crap anyway. I could just about hit mivec in gear 1 at the speed limit. LOL

thanks for the reply guys. i've tried both auto and tip and it doesnt really make any difference at all. i can drive tip, have it in the lower gears and rev the crap outta it until the revs get high and i need to change gears but it still goes at snail pace...even if its in first and i floor it, there will be no wheelspin or launch at all...thats how bad it is. lol. its just a really slow steady acceleration all the way up. dont know if that helps. maybe i can take a video or something.

1st gear in 4spd tip can reach 70/80kmh,
the rpm flies once above 4/5k, 5k to 8k+ is like <1sec. ???
i often shift too late till it hits the rev limiter stucked at bit over 8k rpm.
the needle just rises too fast in gear 1.

i didn't try thrashing the gear 2 though, coz that'd be over the speed limit :p
and, i did notice my launch on D seems way more torquey after i often drag with the gear 1 on tip mode.

LOL...yeh actually i forgot to write that into my original post. because i have to rev it so hard all the time it is an absolute killer on the petrol. which i wouldnt mind so much if i actually got from point A to point B quicker because of it...but i dont. if anything i probably end up taking longer :?

It sort of sounds like MIVEC isn't engaging. Have you neededto change your alternator since you bought the car?

yep...everytime. so you can imagine how it feels paying for it everytime and have it go through so quick.

yeh im pretty sure we've had it changed once since we bought it back in 2004. I've only started driving it since a few years ago, used to be my mums. but its been slow ever since we got it.

My Money on the torque convertor sounds like usual symptoms kinda like a slipping clutch in manual.

But before you go spending lots to replace it try flushing the trans fluid first it may just be that simple

This would be my first assumption.

So when you put the car in neutral and rev it revs normal?? nice and smooth and quick?

If so then i would definitly say its gearbox related and more than likely the torque converter.

Omg, I think I missed that from the OP, but if he's trying to get any power out of the 4th gear he can't, it's an overdrive for fuel savings.

Revving the nuts off it in 4th will cook your gearbox so don't do it.

Your (our) cars are actually 3 speed automatics with an overdrive, that is all.

Don't for the love of pete rev them in 4th...

nah when im in 4th it will never go over 3000 rpm. thats not a lot right? sometimes i have to really floor it though if im to make it up those hilly freeway sections, otherwise i will be going about 60 on the freeway. the rpms dont get any higher though. its the lower gears that are a hassle. if i were to do a 0-100 time im pretty certain it would be double digits or pretty close to it haha :|
