Ciggy prices
well they went up a while ago but f**k me... this government sucks balls
they covered up ciggies at woolies thinking it would make a difference,
they added pictures to try and scare us off
they banned advertisement everywhere, didnt do a thing
now they rise the prices
yes i am a smoker and i would not advise any non-smoker to take it up but this damn government keeps making quick fix band-aid solutions to please the public and try to keep their short term longevity.
same thing with all the new road rules, whilst some work to an extent it has made australia one of the most babysitted-countries in the world. there are 5 speed cameras on great western highway heading to parramatta 100m spaced out. fkn rediculous
whats next? 20bux for a tooheys?
im actually looking forward to an election for once
/rant... needed to vent

Re: Ciggy prices
Yeah I agree its getting over the top
Sure smoking is an awful habit and yes im a smoker but why should I be penelised and raped via tax
Everything these days is bad for you so whats next a huge coffee tax or raise a beer by 25% its just gone too far.
The revenue they make from tobacco tax more than outweighs the cost of health care so what are they doing with the rest of the $?
Im all for not smoking in public places and blank or hidden packaging ETC as I respect the right to others wish not to be near it but why the hell am I being taxed so much for no reason

Re: Ciggy prices
Well 2 things come to mind when a tax like this comes up:
- Cost of covering respiratory healthcare only catching up to the system as of now.
- Australia being an aging nation (average age is now higher as the baby-boomers move up in years).
Government has to pay for it somehow. The government has its problems like any other country but at the end of the day I tell myself "at least we're not as fucked up as America with their lack of socialised medicine".

Re: Ciggy prices
A victorian pm actually brought up a really good point the other day. He said that the whole idea of smokers having a large drain on the health care system, that is why the tax on ciggies is so high, is an absolute load of crap. Infact it has just the opposite effect. People have to die sometime and the amount of health the non smokers need when they hit retirement and beyond is a far larger cost to the government. At least smokers are dying early.
I dont smoke nor do I condone smoking, however I do believe the government has way to much power and if people want to smoke, f**ken let them. As long as you dont do it near me.

CHRISTIANITY: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

Re: Ciggy prices
I too am a smoker, but I've long since been rid of the $15 pack a day cost, I moved onto rollies long along ago. $20 a week.
It annoys me thou, its just a tax grab. An easy tax to pass (because no one likes us smokers because "we clog up the health system"
ps, you lot can f**k off, more people die from health complications because of obesity, than from smoking...try telling a fatty with diabetes not to go to Maccas for lunch) and a tax grab to cover all the other fuckups this government has so kindly taxed us for already.
Furthermore, and I dont want to get too much into steriotyping or demographics here, but its a known fact that lower educated workers have a higher instance of smoking. That same lower educated working class are traditionally the labour voters. The very same labour voters that putt Kevin "Working Families" Rudd in power. What labour leader throws out a tax like this in an election year? Beffudles me how this reatrd runs our country.

Re: Ciggy prices
this one is a no brainer the social costs of tobacco abuse totals just under $31.5 billion, more than 56% of the total estimated social costs of drug and alcohol abuse combined in Australia. Health care costs for smokers are as much as 47 percent higher than those for nonsmokers

nope medicare is bs
personally cost my family a fair bit of money
health insurance often doesnt cover things that are covered by medicare
if something is covered 1% by medicare you have to pay the other 99% despite having insurance
to me that is bs

Re: Ciggy prices
ahhh yes, see but the government has played smoking around in circles since day one.
everyone says its a drug, it preety much is, but the reason the government hasnt banned it is because they get so much money from it. they put out endless campaigns, high taxes and these newer anti-smoking schemes... yet if its so bad why is it still legal?
theyve tried to cover up this easy money-grab for far too long.
no smoking = government loss in money, bet you free to air tv wont be free anymore or some other bullshit
smoking = government $$$ win
