Buying an FTO! advice much needed!

Post by Mitsu-fan »

Hey guys, I'm buying an '96 GPX FTO, and i need some prebuy advice, so basically the paints not perfect on the car (typical mitsu paintwork there) but that really dosent matter, basically I went over the car, and it was perfect other than a slick of
oil underneath the car where the transmission is, the car has recently had it's timing belt and alternator replaced and the owner said the oil was prob from that but it's on the wrong side, obviously I'm going to get it mechanically inspected at a good import specialist I know, but I just want some info on what could be the cause of it, it is a small leak from what I can see, but I wouldn't want to overlook it and then later on having to deal with something major, any ideas?

Thanks - James

Hey mate not just saying this becasue im selling mine but the seals should of been cahnged when the timing belt was changed...make sure the seller isnt pulling your leg about the timing belt...Otherwise mostlikely gearbox seal gone....To change that probly looking at 400 bux labor same as changing a clutch really as the gearbox has to be droped off the motor....

If you havnt bought it yet check out my car for sale :D

Nar the timing is on the opposite side to the leak, I've seen invoices for the timing, it was done less than 100 kms ago, its a slick of oil, so it's a very small leak,
no thanks on yours mate, in a diffirent state, and this car has had 2 owners, one an old guy who bought it from japan new, and the chick I'm buying it off, you have most likely thrashed it correct?

First thing Welcome to the Club mate :D

As for leak can be a few things....
-crank seal on g/box side
-rocker cover gasket and has travelled down to that side
-oil filter
-cam seals on g/box side

Now what colour is it? if oil will be one of the above non of which are a major problem and would only fix when you need to get to that part of motor eg like changing clutch or spark plugs etc

By the way where are you located?

Thanks for the welcome man :) appreiate it, yeah I don't think its anything major (yet), so i'll see what the mechanics say, its obviously a very slight leak, it could even be overflow as she has recently changed the oil, but i doubt it, being where it is... I would prefer not to say where i'm from until i own the car, for obvious reasons... which should be tomorrow, and I prefer modding cars myself amacha, putting my own mark on cars, hence why im buying a stock FTO, to be honest im not a fan of what you've done to it, especially the paint, not worth 5 grand for a full respray to me, sorry, and for a 95, its overpriced mate... but good luck all the same eh? :)
