Transmission?

Post by Shhtuart »

Hello all,

I just picked up my FTO GPvR yesterday and there seems to be a problem with the transmission.

The RACV comprehensive check picked up a slight transmission leak but the mechanic said it wasn't a major issue and would only need a top up every 5000km or so.

The auto accelerates perfectly, but on the way down, it seems to get stuck in third and then shift down into first with a suttle lurch forward.

e.g. brake, goes down the about 7kmh then drops into first and jumps forward.

any ideas what could be the problem?

So when slowing down, your car changes from 3rd into 1st?

I'm sorry to say but your transmission is functioning properly :P

It's normal, might need a fluid change though.

that's what mine does.

annoying as hell, but how it works.

on downshifts I tend to manually over ride the car, because naturally I know best when it needs to shift :P

as for the leak, where is it coming from?
seal around the front?

sounds normal but jumping forward may be due to worn lower crossmember mounts

Yeah im not 100% on what you mean but i suggest changing at at fluid and resetting you at ecu by disconnecting your battery for 5 mins

I'll give the ecu reset a go tomorrow and look into the transmission fluid change.

Would worn lower crossmember mounts mean a new transmission? :(

Also, the RACV inspector couldn't determine where the leak was coming from all he said was to give it a wash and run it then have a look where it was coming from.

Another thing is that the revs sit kind of high.

is ~1100rpm too high for sitting idle?

thanks for the help guys, its appreciated :D

1, good idea
2, a mount is where the gearbox attaches to the car, if it's worn it simply needs a new rubber inner piece
3, get her up on a hoist somewhere, throw maybe 1 hours labour at a mechanic and tell them to find the leak, u gotta know where it's coming from
4, 1100 rpm for idling when its cold is fine. If it's doing it all the time it could be the stepper motor or simply just the accelerator cable not adjusted properly

EDIT!

Take it to a transmission specialist to throw a little money at getting the problem diagnosed. They should also be able to plug in a diagnostics machine and ensure nothing else is wrong. The lurching, my car does that, but I know my gearbox is borked and am waiting for it to blow before I get another and work it.
