mensa

Post by brad_gpx »

hey im joining mensa but i have a slight problem

i took the WAIS-III (wechsler adult intelligence scale - third edition) in about april 2009

mensa accept the WAIS-IV which is the later version of this test

i can still apply on my outdated test but it says only if i did the WAIS-III while the WAIS-IV wasnt available

on the internet it says the WAIS-IV came out in 2008, however my psychologist says its came out in this year/late last year
im thinking perhaps the 2008 was the american date
im just wondering if anyone has any knowledge to confirm when this test comes out? because its going to cost me money to apply to get in and being the cheap ass student that i am i dont want to fork out for it especially since the only reason im joining is to make my resume look better

thanks in advance

It is a shame that having a high I.Q. has no bearing on your E.Q.

Haha, I was just waiting for a comment like that.

Seriously, I have to question your motives for posting a question like that on CAR CLUB FORUM...

a) who cares?
b) as if you have much of a chance of finding anyone on here who actually knows or cares.

and

c) who cares?

Basically what I'm getting at is, it seems to me you're just trying (and failing) to impress...

not trying to impress or anything

just wondering if anyone would know, i guarantee you there is someone who does as i seem to get outsmarted in every argument i post on here, every argument posted on here seems to be better constructed with mine and much more thought out, also wouldnt surprise me if the someone here is a psychologist and could give me a little more information.

if i was trying to impress i wouldnt post that i got 57 in my atar have a horrible attention span an pretty much failed at all subjects at school, majority of people on here are more successful then i will ever be and smarter than me. i spent 30 minutes on google trying to find this out and all said 2008 so i honestly have no idea,

emailed the recruiting officer but i doubt they will be able to get back to me soon and since i am currently failing in getting a job anywhere and wont have time soon because of exams coming up for uni that i have to spend an impossible ammount of time studying for because i cant seem to comprehend most of it.

WAIS-IV has been around since '03 or '04, but its standardisation in aust. wasn't finalised until late 2008, or so I thought. Having said that your psychologist would have more knowledge of the subject, one would presume. The alternative would be to call like and ask I've just tried - but for allegedly intelligent people - their telephone system is switched to voicemail. Le-sigh

I will call them tomorrow and see if I have better luck... Why? Basically cause I'm interested now, and phone calls to Perth are free for me..

i just want it on my resume because it is impossible to find a job as a student where i live thats decent and it seriously stressing trying to do stuff on <$50 a week, and when i get stressed it just makes everything worse so hoping to find a quick fix. i did the test not planning to join mensa or anything just following up some other stuff but thought if ive already done the test might aswell join

my pysch said she knows for a fact that i did mine before IV was available, but i think perhaps it might of been before government decided to use it because its public not private so i cant imagine they would be up to date on everything according to her they also still use it cause IV has bugs in it? i didnt really understand what she meant by that

cheers fto84
if i get a response to my email ill post it on here to help you out
i doubt i will get one for awhile i have very bad luck with these things, when i email staff from the uni it usually takes them 3-4days to reply
also i got told that if we have done the III we cant do the IV for another 2 years :S

also my opinion on mensa: i cant imagine most of the active members would be nice people, i think it would be quite snobby and look down on everyone but themselves and be quite discriminating

Unless you're applying for a Nerdy job like Physicist / some other sciency type job I don't think it would be a selling point on a resume at all.. IMHO anyone seeing it is just going to think you're a bit pretentious & are bragging..

What type of job are you looking for? & What are your skills?

have no skills, currently a uni student
got past work experience
2 years of kfc
6 months pizza hut
1 year guitar teaching (from home so not for any kind of buisness or anything)

i was also thinking that perhaps i could apply for jobs through mensa, id imagine there would be a lot of private buisness owners on mensa and there would be atleast a few local ones that may need someone inexperienced to help out

yeh i thought it would be a tad bragging but i was considering putting something like "intelligence in the 99th percentile" but i thought that would make me sound like the biggest douche, so i was thinking just putting like "active member of mensa" and leaving it at that so any job i applied or that didnt seem to need it would just palm it off and not understand what it was or not care what it was and any job i applied for that had a smarter person managing it e.g working in a pharmacy, working at a reception at doctors office, they would think it was a good thing
it so hard to put an achievement on a resume without sounding like a complete tosser
like i wanted to put the award i won at my formal (the only award i ever won at school) "runner up mr. congeniality" to show that i have fairly good social skills

cause apart from that i dont really have many achievements,
wasnt allowed to run for school captain or prefect (didnt have good enough attendance) so i cant write anything like that down
never won any awards at school
had a 3 year gap from sport due to injury and only started playing last year so i cant write down many sporting achievements
havent done any volunteer work
dont belong to any clubs outside of school

the best i can do is write gosford selective high school
but then when they ring the school they find out how pathetic of a student i was

also i dont really know how to write a good resume or what i should include at all
probably should look it up sometime

Not you then huh?

At Brad; I defended you in another thread, but I wonder why you keep posting things like this and then wonder why you get bagged here.

If you need to post topics such as this and then follow them up with a member (such as FTO84 in this case) use the PM function; it's what it's for because you are going to get people's backs up.

EDIT! Spelling is hard.

EDIT2! Not giving you sh*t, but how in the hell can someone rate that highly in that sort of situation but still not be able to punctuate? What, do you think that MENSA members don't know how to track IP addresses and find out what websites their members are frequenting? They will have one hell of a reputation to uphold; spouting about it here and in that fashion isn't going to do you any good.

Oh, I forgot, google trawls this site regularly and googling the acronym MENSA will very soon show links directly to this post. I hope to god for your sake that your CV doesn't state anything about your membership because I know what anyone reading this will think if they were going to invite you for an interview "not on your life bud!"

spelling is hard and so is grammar im horrible at both
also im lazy hence i dont but ' in all my words

im putting on my resume so i have something that stands out at least a little bit, its impossible to get a job out of fast food around where i live, i handed out probably close to 300-400 resumes and never been invited for an interview back. atleast ill have something that every other kid in the world cant put on there resume

why would mensa members be tracking my ip?, after i join i will not visit the site, if they are going to track everyone who visits there site once and track their ip then they are ridiculous and going to be wasting there time, also what i stated was my opinion.

tbh i really dont care if i get bagged, its an internet forum, and it generally gives me a laugh.

i will use the pm to get back to fto84 rather than post what i what i get back from the recruiting person on here, sorry i am new to forums and dont understand when i should stop posting in a thread and pm instead, i generally tend to follow threads through to end

i realise that a lot of stuff i post will get peoples back up and im sorry for that, but if i do just ignore it. i post this stuff looking for atleast 1 person who knows something that i need to know, it saves me hours looking for the information, and even if i get 100 dicks and 1 helpful person i would still post it

like for example if i had an interest in bestiality pornography and wanted some i would post on here asking for links to bestiality pornography even though i know that everyone will give me sh*t but there may be one person that may be able to help
(yes i know it would be against the rules to post stuff like that i was just using it as an example to show how i will post stuff looking for an answer even if everyone judges me based on it)

thank you for defending me last thread but honestly dont worry about defending me, its the internet, if i write a complete bullshit post that has a bullshit pov and i get given sh*t about it and told that im horrible who cares? im not going to lose any sleep over it. i usually laugh when it get to the point that every second post is @bradgpx your a fool

also i doubt an employer will type in mensa and search for the fto forum, read this and be like "brad ******* must be bradgpx!!!! im not hiring him"

That comment was directed at my own inability to spell when touch typing...

What sort of work are you actually looking for? You have to factor in whether being a MENSA member is even relevant to the jobs you are applying for. Most companies want someone who they can mould to their own standards, not someone who is so far up their own ass that they will alienate people.

Trust me, I have been working full time since I was 18 and I have seen a lot lol

The point is that if people that are members of MENSA are as smart as you are implying then I damn well guarantee that they will simply type "mensa" into google every now and again just to see where that acronym pops up.

Imagine it like this; employers *DO* google their employees, and employees *DO* get fired over the sh*t they write on the intrawebs.

Put succintly; given the tools that are commercially available, anyone with the knowledge could easily track down your home IP address and monitor what you post and where you post it.

It's the nature of the internet and computers these days. For the most part no-one would care about you, but if you were trying to specialise in linguistics for example and had an employer track down your shenanigans on this site do you think they would consider you?

Hmm...

blahahahahha

Therefore my point stands; he just went from associating himself with MENSA in this topic to associating MENSA with beastiality...

That's a big fail there, and if he can't see that then god help MENSA.

ah i thought you meant me as my posts are horrible with grammar and spelling
as pete will tell you

mensa wouldnt really be something that i needed for a job, im currently hoping for what as someone working a clothes store, music store, teachers aid, electronics store, pharmacy

anything that isnt fast food. i would prefer a job were i actually get to talk to the people when they come in and id get to meet new people, as i like doing this. i just plan to put it on to try and make my resume stand out because i have nothing else to make it stand out and i doubt employers often take a look at it.
i know this is kind of personal and if you dont want to answer it you dont have to, but what do you put for like achievements on your resume? maybe ive missed something that i could have put on there?
btw you seem like a good person at finding jobs, if i pm'ed you my resume would you be able to tell me how sh*t it is what i should do with i?

also if you google my name it comes up with chess team from primary school :D :D :D

maybe i should take beastiality out of my interests on my resume 8O
