FTO as track car???

I know Ben takes his out, and Aza has a bash also.

Been tossing up for a while getting back into competitions and what not.

Want to stay Mitsu, been looking at the old school RWDrs, but not much on offer that I would strip, they've all been fixed up, and I couldnt heart stripping it.

Meanwhile, thought of going the FTO way, find a junky body/ dead engine/ shell etc, manual ofcourse, and whack in an evo motor for good measures.

No rego, just track, so don't have to make it to road laws.
Keep costs down.

But I dunno, I appreciate FWD, but feel RWD would be more of an advantage, specially if I decided to go drift scene.

If I cant find suitable Mits, I'd just go S13, but honestly would rather not, despite ease of parts....

Drifting is for poofs. Its the syncronised swimming of motorsport.

Trust me, get 300kws in your FTO, you wont give a rats arse what wheels are doing the power bit

S13,S14 and 180 rolling shells go for an easy 2k. they are everywhere, stroll through nissansilvia.com classifieds and you'll see. motors are always for sale and parts are so easy to get.

if your looking for a track pig, i wouldnt focus to much on what shape the body is. if your going fwd go for a civic hatch.

at the last Shift Performance 'na vs turbo' track day, a civic blist the field by more than a second. we had 3 35gtrs there, a ferrari, porches and the usual evos/wrx and silvias.

i recomend RWD (of couse id say that) because theres only so far you can go with time attack, get a car that can handle the business and have fun with. silvia chasis' are known to easily adapt between touge/sprints to drift very easily.

IMO why waste money chucking a evo engine in an fto for 10-20k on top of car purchase when you can pick up a track ready car for allot cheaper. spend the extra cash you save on brake pads and tyres when you actually do hit the track.

Yeah,
Even though it would be a track pig, appearance is a big for me, call me shallow

the fto was a whim of a thought, was aiming originally toward a sigma, but as said about the oldies, but the chassis arent great.

More I think about it, the more I'm leaning towards a car Ive secretly wanted for ages.

my97 wrx..

parts everywhere, easy to mod, very capable, engines arent greeat from what ive been told, honestly never found engines to be a problem.
But had some fun in the rexies years ago, and i feel the sub calling again.

whilst yes, an s13 is the smartest choice, I do agree there, it just doesnt suit me, couldnt drive something i cant stand looking at.

plus i like awd in the wet. predictable.

not a fan of the s14, s15, r32, r34, 180 look? heck if i could find a nice datsun 280zx, 260zx or 240zx i would go nuts with it

wrx arent that bad, can have allot of fun in them when set up properly... then take it offroad and join a rallyclub

I do like the 180, ricelines.... dunno, not my cup of tea, plus not as nimble, more about power.

ultimately want a well balanced car.

If you want a well ballanced car for the track you can't go past a NA6/8 mx5.Seriously don't burn me for this but there aren't many rwd cars that have as much grip around corners and I know they lack in power but the motors and gearboxes in these cars are Almost indestructable and they are made for turbocharging.you can buy a half decent one for around 4-5k spend 1.5k on coilovers ,$700 on a roll bar and 5-8k on turbo kit,clutch,brakes etc. It's just ashame everyone thinks there chicks cars

the mx5 is a good and well balanced car....... but kinda like racing against an old tr7, different class of driving.
certainly different to what i'm after.

I'm definitely about handling, but I can tackle the power also to get better times which is what I'm after.

Since Ive made this thread, I've only drawn a stronger descision to go with a gen 1 wrx.
definitely fav car, and i know they can handle.

dunno how i forgot about them in the first place, but i was thinking rwd, and trying to stay mitsu.

yeh i love the mx5's. there are heaps of insanely setup mx5's around southwest sydney... cages, coilovers, seat roll bars. the works.

theres a huge market for parts aswell. ive seen a few with FD engines (13b i think?) aswell!

they are hairdresser cars just like our ftos... and like ours, are so underated

They are just around the corner from work, they have some pretty interesting projects goingon there at the moment... and not mx5's

Already decided guys. 97 wrx it is. cheap, easy to find parts, good on balance, and a decent power house.

now the hunt begins for a real cheap one, and preferably in my fav color.

Cant believe nobody suggested to get an evo. You can find them decked out with parts on import sites and dirt cheap. Same kinda applies for the wrx though, although the evo's are better. Better box (lol), engine and brakes than the wrx. Evo 6 is where its at. There's heaps of evo's in general in brisbane doing the sprint circuit at QR in under a minute.

If you wanna do it on the cheapside of things though, I'd suggest to go ahead with your original idea and get an s13 chasis. Chuck in an rb25det and spend money on getting the suspension and motor built. My mechanics sponsor track car's engine was putting out 550hp atw's from a rb25

Mx5's is the *~dreamy~*.

Drifting is for poofs who consider it motorsport. People in europe had been mountain runs and drifting for years before the japs came along and made a big thing about it.

Evo was the first thing to mind.
But if I ever owned an evo, I wouldnt strip it for track, not unless I had some real cash going.

It is for the cheaper side, as It would mostly be a fun kinda thing, and just to do it for enjoyment, nothing hardcore.

If I cant find a cheap wrx, I'll go the s13 for sure, friends are heavy into the Niz, and can get me all the parts I need for cheap and easy.

the japs didnt make a big thing of it, it slowly rose to media stardom because other motorsports limelight got boring

i do agree it isnt a motorsport though, its a more a spectacle. although i do admire the skill it takes to control a vehicle at such limits. and after actually learned to drift (tried to at least) over 2 track days, ive never had more fun in a car besides on the touge.

and please... what country hasnt been doing mountain runs forever. whats your claim based from?
