Gear Change in Auto

Just are thought really, is it bad to change the gears (ie. drive to reverse) while the car isnt completely stopped? Sometimes I do it while the car is rolling slightly and just wondered if it was bad....

Dont laugh to har if this a idiotic question

I did it once in a blaze of idiocy. I went from drive to reverse (I usually hit neutral from drive, but that day I for some reason depressed the button allowing reverse, got a small clunk then a tick tick tick noise til I stopped. All was fine though after that so I guess it was a fail safe.

In short, not a good idea. Drive, stop, engage reverse. Now, coasting in neutral (like rolling a little on a slope) then hitting reverse is ok. It is relevant how much speed you are carrying when you engage reverse. In general, you don't want to put an auto into reverse while it's going forward

I nearly put my car into reverse while driving 80kmph. Was going to change gear thought something wasn't right so I tried to push the gear up to go up a gear and it went into neutral. So putting it into reverse will only slightly damage it not come to a complete stop?

Drive to Neutral is fine.
But reverse should never be selected if the car is moving forward, only if at a complete stop.

I was under the impression that there is a failsafe mechanism to stop an auto box engaging if you are moving forward at any rate and stick it in reverse by accident

There is, if you read my post you will see what I mean. But in short, don't do it... I'm sure it won't take many occurances to render the failsafe inoperable and then your box will be fucked

There is no failsafe when your reversing at low speed then change to drive

i have done this 2-3 times in my manual
forgetting there is no 6th gear just reverse

always makes i pleasant grinding noise
