The signature FTO roof rust?
From what I've heard and read it seems like there's a fair few FTOs going around that either have, or had, the bubble-like rust on the roof exterior. So I was just wondering if anyone on here that's had this problem has gotten their's fixed/removed and how much did it cost to get it done?

sigh... yeh its quite common on ftos with sunroofs.
ive been quoted from 2-3.5k for a fix. including removal of rust rewelding paint and patchup.
with the declining car purchase value of the fto and mine being preety bad im not going to bother anymore as ive been told the only way for me is to reweld a hold new roof or get a roof skin from japan which could take months.

Was that an average from multiple quotes or have you only asked the one place?J wrote:sigh... yeh its quite common on ftos with sunroofs.

Mine's got the same issue - a 95 GR - no sunroof... only just starting to come through though - was not there when i bought her - the glue used to fix the skeleton to the shell retains moisture so will come through along the beams of the roof - a early lancers had the same issue.. Have had quotes between 1.1 and 1.5k so far - thats to get them to remove all the glue also cause i CBF'd (that and people get nervous [rightfully] when i get near a car with a spanner, screwdriver or any other piece of metal that's not a key)...
roof replacement is an option - but expensive - from what i've heard, welding it out is a perfectly ok option - just make sure they are a decent place & get a warranty.

As a first step, at least remove the glue:

FTOs with a sunroof are much harder to do because there are 2 extra lines of glue and a subframe that needs to be removed to repair (drilling out spot welds).

they use glue to separate the subframe from the roof skin. Problem is it holds water and rusts the roof out from the inside. the link above tells you how to remove the glue

What did that cost you? And how of it was to fix the roof?I8A4RE wrote:I got mine fixed when I got the spray job done, had to go back about 5 times for them to get the roof right. You dont need a whole new roof welded in but it is not an easy job to do at all.
Also, what type of place/s would be best to get quotes for this type of thing?
