Shocker part numbers

Post by Muse7707 »

Hi,

I'm a new FTO owner (bought my first one 2 weeks ago) :) always driven the old Commodore, and am having real difficulty finding parts for it.

I've had the belts and seals and stuff changed, but need the front shockers replaced. Only problem is, everywhere I ring say they need a part number before they can quote me on it. Some have said they're sure the shockers are interchangeable with other model Mitsubishi's but they're not sure which ones and it would be easier if I found out. I'm in Melbourne.

Anyone got a list or idea of what is compatible?? I only want standard shocks, nothing special or fancy. :?:

Oh, my car is a 95 GR FTO auto 2000cc

Any help appreciated.

Mate you might find a set of KYB or similar may be cheaper than stock. I'm pretty sure they are KYB's standard anyway. Oh and I'm sure someone will be along shortly with a part number but I'm pretty sure they are the same as a CC Lancer.

If you've gone to places and they've said it would be easier for you to find out I'd try some better suspension joints. I used to live in the sticks and the shop I went to found FTO in their supply book and ordered me my KYB replacements which I had fitted the next day......

I am loving it. :D It's a beautiful looking car.

I got it cheap and then found that, after doing 186,000 it had never had the belts or sparks or anything changed. So, I'm trying to get everything done bit by bit.

I'm figgering the fact it has a loud cracking noise everytime it goes over a bump it's gotta be the shocks, so I'm starting there.

Thanks for the help so far.

Much appreciated.

WTTC may suggest that although shocks are prob worn the sound can also be droplinks very common on FTO to go and your Anti Roll Bushes prob stuffed and prob lower control arm bushes gone too but they need to be press fitted hope you love the car and i really reccomend you replace all the above bushes ETC then it will be like a whole new experience :D

Thanks,

I've had a look at both. Which do you think would be the better buy??

And, how do I know if they're not on their way out.

Hmmm ... Tough call ... If it were me ... I think I would go the cusco .. and I would try to pay cod so I could get the strut brace...

You don't really know if they are on the way out ... You just have to take their word that they are fine ... But I don't think it would cost that much to rebuid them ...

KYB Excel G's.

Part numbers are:
Front L: 334154
Front R: 334155

I got mine from burson's for 300 bucks. I tried Kempy's for the stock shocks and they quoted me NZ$250 not including delivery and Mitsu Auto quoted me a bullshit price of $450. the KYB's are pretty good

personally because you dont want anything fancy id just get some kyb replacements. You'll have piece of mind driving without worring about whether they are on their way out and probably cst round the same amount as the teins

O.K. I'm convinced.

Going to try and source the KYB's tomorrow.

Also, going to try and track down the anti roll bar bushes, lower control arm bushes and front droplinks.

Hopefully, if I replace them all it'll solve the problem and I won't have to worry about it again for awhile. Fingers crossed. Then I can move on to the next project on the car.

O.k.

3 weeks later and I've still got the cracking creaking noise. Intermittently now. Mainly in the morning and seems to dissipate as it gets warmer.

I've had the shockers, and droplinks done. The suspension guy said the ball joints and other bushes were fine although the passenger side ball joint was just sitting there and all he had to do was tighten it up again.

Now, he said there were some bushes that needed changing but that the cross member would have to be dropped to get to them and that was a very big job. Didn't seem particularly interested in doing it either. What are these bushes at the back and could they be what is causing the noise??

Any help appreciated here as it's all that's stopping me from enjoying my rid.

Thanks for the welcome.

Hoping that they find what your creak is and it's my creak as well. :)

Never thought I'd be driving an FTO. It was either that or an Astra and the FTO won out. :D

It seems to me a lot of people seem scared to work on these cars. Any reason in particular??

I had it in a Mitsubishi for the belt and seals to be changed and have had to take it back 4 times since cos the cam seal kept leaking. Turns out they kept putting in a Magna seal that is 0.7mm too small. I did tell tham that a Magna and a FTO are two totally different engines, but hey, what do I know. Anyway, fourth time back and so far ((crossing fingers)) no oil from there for now. But I've noticed there is a slight leak from the other side of the engine. What seal is there??

Sorry for all the questions, but I want to know as much as I can. I like to do as much work on it as I can myself. I did the oil change and put in a MAF system and am making a list of what I can get to myself. Wanted to do the spark plugs and fuel filter as well, but was told that's a very big job and best left to the experts. Hubby thinks I'm crazy, but what does he know. ;)

bumping this thread (didnt want to make a new one)

ive got a similar problem, abit of a creaking noise. mainly when i go over speed bumps, seems to happen at lower speeds which is strange, and also it is louder in the mornings like what muse said.. i took it to pedders and had that 28 point check, they said the front & rear sway bar link pins were knocking and the rear bush was worn and knocking

what does this mean exactly? the guy didn't really elaborate on it.

Is it important i get them changed asap or is it still ok to drive?

Alright. I also had the cracking noise in the front passenger side and losts of noises in the back. I had the front 2 swaybar links changed which cost 125 for parts. If im not wrong, the lower control arm bushes might also have worned out it is a common problem with the FTO's. I drove like almost a year with the problem and finally got it changed because the noise was really getting to me. Not so sure if its really important to change it asap but I always believe that if u take care of your car it will do the same back to u.If you need to source the parts you can try camskill. Oh and I did mine at Nandi's at keybourough. Took it half a day to get everyting fixed.
