I hope your not meaning the decompression gasket?

I agree with ben, cheapest way out would be an engine swap

ben would you know if the rpw head gasket kit is worth a thought?
The only ones I can see are shims & decomp gaskets :?

I'd seriously be considering another engine. A head service will cost $500 (thats if there are no bent valves), gasket kit $200+, timing belt & tensioners $200+, labour $500+

Dwayne'll probably have a GR motor you can have for $500.

arghhh! more expense :x

if anyone has what im looking for please pm me.
Pulleys connected to the timing belt are never removed during a timing belt change???? 8O

would it be a big hassle dropping a mivec engine in it? what extra work would have to go into changing from a gr to gpx engine?

I think the gearbox is on the other side (gearbox to the right of the engine bay) and driveshafts are different sizes so if you put a mivec engine in, you'll need shafts from a mivec fto. <--- Not too sure about this.

See if anyone can confirm first. :?

Gearboxes are on the same side... its the same block remember

Biggest headache is wiring. You'll need a Mivec ECU to suit too. If you keep your box you wont have to worry about driveshafts etc.

UPDATE:

cars been sitting in the workshop for 3-4 weeks/

strolled into the workshop expecting the car to be finished within days.

turns out the parts havnt arrived from japan... turns out apparently that Mitsu Japan don't even make the parts im after (so they say) wtf? that can't be right.

i asked the guy in charge whats gona happen to my car now? are they going to look somewhere else or have they even tried anywhere local and they replied with "theres nothing we can do"

so the fto is just lying there in the workshop.

so now im going to get the part numbers off them and try to look for them myself. (camskill, mitsu aus???)

[rant]
fuming as i also got them to install my under strut, machine all the brake disks and replace the pads, service and what not... but the most crucial part of the job is not being attended to.... so whats the point if i dont have a running car. [/rant]

seriously considering just selling the fto as is and moving on.

What wrong with just putting a second hand motor in  $500will get you one, $500 will get it in. I don't know why every pans that idea, I f**ken wish I'd done it now!

Spending nothing now & selling the car with a busted engine will get you 5 grand.
Spending $1000 now & selling the car in working order will get you 10 grand.
I know what avenue I'd be travelling.

6A13 will still be no good even if you bump up the compression, its still got turbo profile cams remember, it'll be a dog. Besides, bumping up comrpession means ripping both heads off which means gasket kits, head service etc loom etc ECU etc headache etc etc etc.

I spent months looking for a MIVEC 6A12. In the end, I had to settle for a reasonably high mileage (147 000km) unit for $750. The mechanics who put it in for me took a month and charged me $1100 for the swap.

It's all well and good to say an engine swap should only cost $1000 including parts, but the trouble is finding a workshop that knows enough about what they're doing to actually get through it in a realisitic time-frame to charge you that much. Another issue is finding a well preserved engine and paying what its worth. Many useless wreckers around Queensland were giving me quotes of over 2 grand for engines that they didn't even have an accurate mileage reading on.

Plus, if you're going down the path of a second hand engine, while its out of the car, especially if mileage is unkown, it would most likely be prudent to do some standard maintainence work like replacing seals, possibly even timing belt etc. Right there, there's more money.

Sorry Ben, I'm not arguing with you, it's just that I have gone through this with an FTO and I really don't believe $1000 for an entire engine swap is a realistic figure.

As for the N/A 6A13 conversion, aside from running issues due to the engine being set up for forced induction, J wouldn't be able to drive the car on his Ps. Any engine swap requires engineer approval (a mod plate), therefore preventing any P plater from driving that car, due to the law stating that they are restricted from driving a vehicle with an engine-related mod plate.

Yeah fair play, but this is a non mivec & they are traditionally cheaper.
but the trouble is finding a workshop that knows enough about what they're doing to actually get through it in a realisitic time-frame to charge you that much
If you cop that arguement, then its off to the next workshop. I get sick of hearing about people being charged by workshops because "its an import" and therefore harder and more expensive. Its just a bloody lancer with a Galant engine in it. No more bolts than any other engine swap would have.

Find the right motor & I'll put it in for you for $300! I'll even do timing belt & water pump if you supply the parts.
