does anyone know how the stepper actually works? when the car is cold, is the plunger in or out? i want to figure out a way to bypass the stepper and do it manually, like a choke.
why was this ever fitted if it breaks down so often??

If its just the rev going too low before it warms up, i had that problem before, but i just change the idle inside the engine bay (on the manifold) a cross screw and u just turn it to change the rev idle. Mines a 96 GPX manual

ok. bought a new stepper from nardek. started perfect the 1st time and idled, then the next day back to the same old problem, so it can't be the stepper that is the problem. any other ideas???

ok, new starter fitted $330. tried to start as usual, but still the same problem, up and down between 1000 and 0 rpm's at idle.
Ben, resetting the ecu?? like just having the battery disconnected then re connecting it??

ive figured out that the stepper is usually closed once the temp. is up to normal, and open slightly when cold?? does this sound right? so i'm guessing that mine will close but won't re-open, like it only turns one way. i can pull the stepper apart and physicaly wind it open and reinstall it and it works once, but the second time i try it , same problem. any wonder i hate stepper motors !!!!!!!!!!!!! its been in and out 1000 times already, i'm having nightmares about it !!!!!!

help !!!!!

I had similar problems about 2 years ago.

replaced the throttle position sensor-There are guides somewhere on how to test if thats working. Didn't fix it although mine wasn't working properly.

Got a new stepper off ebay for $90. heres my old post about them.
http://www.ftoaustralia.com/modules.php ... ht=stepper

Stopped it from stalling most times but what ended up fixing it was getting a can of nulon carby and throttle body cleaner and giving the throttle body and intake a good clean. Mine builds up a bit of oily crap from the breather hose.

Also for a temporary fix you can adjust the idle screw to make it idle a bit higher. its a screw on the back of the throttle body that opens the butterfly a bit.

From a cold start does your car rev to roughly 1.5k before settling down to idle speed when warm?

When you turn on your AC do your revs rise or dip?

When you place car in neutral or park when warm is there a significant increase in revs?

its a mitsubishi thing man, had the same problem with my car (4g63t) tested out all the stepper motor bull sh*t turne out to be because i had the cover off my pod filter and there was a difference in the readings to the AFM, it is probably some sort of vacuum leak its hard to distinguish because there is so many causes. I totally eliminated mine by putting on a haltech e8... no idle problems now lol.

No I think he would of removed the MAF sensor and went MAP,

It could be your MAF sensor though

no to all 3 questions.
So if your revs don't rise to around 1.5k during a cold start you most likely have a stepper issue. What does your car idle at when you start it up first thing in the morning?

Next cold start, start the engine with the stepper disconnected. Does the characteristics of engine change?

So every stepper you have tried works the first time and then dies on second cold start???

Test it to see if the coils are still ok. The stepper makes a buzzing noise when you turn your car ignition to on. If its not working you won't hear sh*t.

Because Mitsubishi are the only car manufacturer who cant get the ISC to work properly.

every stepper i tried worked first time and not 2nd. but it then worked ok in my son's car. seems like there is another signal from somewhere that is causing the problem. like the stepper is only turning in one direction (closing) and won't open next time i start up.

when i start up from cold the engine idles between 0 and 1000 rpm's up and down every few seconds, but when it hits 0 obviously it stalls.
