funny noise - when clutch is out

Post by EURO »

Just as a matter of interest.....

I have had this noise since i can remember, but wondering what it might be....

It is not all the time -almost though, when im sitting at the lights in neutral i can hear a "whirring noise" coming from the engine.....

If i engage the clutch, the noise disappears completely but as soon as the clutch starts to disengage the noise re appears...

any ideas?

Worry not... Chances are it's not bearings or scary stuff.

It's almost certainly the little springs in the clutch rattling around. After years of 1st gear starts crawling along in Tokyo traffic, they tend to get a little compressed. Once they are compressed so they don't hold themselves under tension, they rattle.

It doesn't make the noise in gear because there is load on them.

Hope this helps!

- Rich

PS. 4 years owning a manual and I'm totally used to it. But on Monday I'm getting my clutch replaced, and they will *finally* be silent! New springs at last, hehe.
