yip if you have the intelligence you say you do  then FTEVO is correct go the engineereing route
instead of the limited v8sc look further a field

F1 would be the ultimate or top of the list if you could get there, or the feeder series like GP2 or touring cars and the likes. :D

if its motorsport you want than europe or the states is where the money is at ;)

Sorry, didn't know it was a crime to admit you're good at something, especially when you make it clear that you are not attempting to brag.

@ FTEVO- I actually was considering mechanical engineering, but I have this thing against academic study and the irrelevant hoops we are forced to jump through in order to prove our intelligence and competency - I hate research assignments that take over your life...

So basically I'm desperately trying (in vain, it seems) to find a practical job that would have some relatively good earnings prospects but zero after hours work necessary. I don't mind working hard during the day, but I want to be able to come home and have my own time to relax and do what I want.

I know, I'm young and naive, but no matter how many times my teachers and friends tell me I'm an idiot for not going to uni, I just really don't want to do it.

I don't see what "how intelligent you are" has to do with choosing a career .. if you don't like what you're doing, what's the point?

Obviously Dan is trying to choose something he's interested in & isn't asking whether people think he should be an astro-physicist or whatever ..

@Dan .. IMO take a year off .. work, travel, figure sh*t out .. try a few different jobs if you want .. there is nothing to say that you "have" to go to Uni / Tafe the first year out of school & the best time to figure out if you want to be a mechanic is 'before' you pay thousands of dollars for a tafe / uni course.. hell .. If I could do it again I would have taken time off to work .. if nothing else, it means that you qualify under Centrelink law for Independence status if you earn over a certain amount since leaving school .. meaning that when you finally do decide to study .. or you're between jobs that you're trying out, you can go straight onto Centrelink without having to jump through hoops proving your parents income etc ;)

The worst thing for me while studying full time in my first year out of school, was that you can't just go on centrelink & get the full amount, you only get a fraction of the full cost / nothing at all if your parents earn too much & you can't work, because you're always busy..

Anyways .. from personal experience, and I can only speak for myself .. but I don't think I was disciplined enough to want to put in the effort in the first year out of school ..
I'd just spent the last 12+ years in school & was kind've over it (probably like you are feeling now) so I was kinda slack about my study.. if I went to Uni now, after working for a few years I'd probably be more likely to put in the effort & not slack off.. but oh well..

anyways mate .. don't take people's comments too seriously ;) 99% of the time they're just stirring the pot..

Thanks mate :)

Actually, since you mentioned it, the reason I'm so stressed about figuring out what to do is because of Youth Allowance.

Firstly, the government actually just changed those laws in the budget the other night. The certain amount of earnings in a certain time doesn't apply anymore. The only way to claim independence is if you work FULL TIME for 2 years. Otherwise, you have to prove you are unable to live at home to be declared independent. Which brings me to my next point...

I actually currently am an independant on full Youth Allowance payments and have been since 2007. I moved in with my girlfriend and her family after leaving home following years of family breakdown.

So here's the deal...

I'm currently in a good position, because if I choose to study next year, I'm already on Youth Allowance and that will make it much easier for me with accomodation and everything. However, if I choose to take a gap year, my Youth Allowance will stop and I'm worried that I will find it extremely difficult to get back on it again when I decide to return to study.

Okay, so all of that was sort of off-topic :| But yea, I basically started this thread to try and find out how much I would be paid as a race mechanic because I would love to find a well-paying job in that field and want to get my 'real life' started as soon as possible.

I didn't know about those changes .. that's pretty dodgy..

But, once you leave school, you claim NewStart, , which is "looking for work" allowance.. you have to fill in the forms each week about what jobs you're applying for etc etc, but oh well.. or *AusStudy? if you're going to tafe / uni

basically you could go on NewStart for 6 months or so *i think* before you would have to start "working for the dole" or put on "intensive job training" .. my gf used to work for BoysTown & has some stories ... you don't want to have to do the intensive training - you get lumped in with people that have the IQ of a canetoad & 'taught' how to make resumes & apply for jobs ..
just apply to a job network place, do the interview & get marked off on the c'link system & just don't hand in the completed application form for them to put you into their system & with any luck you'll be off their radar & still able to collect.. ;)
