Reverse Gear is Stuck?

Post by mivecmivec1 »

hi Guys,

Been a lurker on the forums for a while now..I have a 97 GPX..hehe my ferarri wannabe.

I started her up this morning and it would go into reverse gear..all other gears are fine just reverse...my mate has a FTO as well and same thing happens early in morning..

Any ideas?

Thanks

Im guessing tiptronic????

Tip
Im guessing either a sensor or fluid temp problems is this happening when only cold or all the time? Check error msg's

Manual
Sounds bad, maybe a syncro or something worse

manual - used to happen sporadically now and then..usually fine if I start her up after 5 mins..today it seemed permanent, just tried it again and still wont engage reverse.

Know any good workshops around the Gold Coast area?

right, I would check over your linkages first but sounds internal.

As for workshops, joe and rik's in southport. Check out "reputable workshops' thread in qld section for contact details

A gearbox not engaging reverse can also be one of the bearings (not sure if it's the thrust or the spigot that causes this). Like Simon said could be something much nastier though like synchro's etc. Hopefully it's one of these as they're cheap as but labour's gonna be a pain.... The manuals are a fairly strong box for what they are though. Goodluch

Can you get it into Reverse when the car isn't running? What happens when you start the car with the clutch depressed after that?

Do a process of elimination mate, if you can't get it into reverse when car isn't running you may have stripped the reverse gear! (hope you haven't been doing reverse -> 1st burnouts  )

Hmm I was speaking to a mate and he suggested it could be the "lock-out" mechanism being stuck...as I understand the FTO gearbox's (like other cars.) have a mechanism that prevents reverse being engaged while you are driving..sometimes this may malfunction and remain activated after the car is driven (which kinda makes sense since it happened the morning after I drove it..)

Long story short anyone know wherre this is "lock out" mechanism is activated on the FTO?

Thanks

Yep, it's mechanical. If that has failed then you will need to remove the gearbox to fix it anyways. Best pulling it out and getting it looked at. No matter what went wrong it's gotta come out.

Sorry fella, no cheap and easy fixes for that problem :S

OK..so now my gearbox is fixed..BUT i have another problem,,this being the car doesnt hold its idle below abt 1500rpm.. :(

The mechanic working on the car said they had to disconnect the battery and this may have "removed the base idle"??

Said this was a issue with mitsubishi's and they take some time to "readjust" their base idle??..he also suggested i clean the intake out as there could be extra carbon build up..

Does this sound plausible?..anyone have this problem if theie battery is disconnected for a long time?

Thanks

wasn't a problem with my car, but its tiptronic.

what was the reverse gear problem? did the mechanic explain?

i was thinking maybe the clutch wasn't dis-engaging. my new car needed clutch adjusting as it was engaging - dis-engaging right down on the floor. thanks again to benno for the pix and fix.
