Seeking information (Looking to acquire some wheels)

Post by Eltnot »

Current situation:
My tyres have plenty of tread, but are a whoping 7.5 years old. As such the rubber is harder and wearing fast, not to mention more slippery when wet. As such I'm looking to replace them very shortly.

My rims are the stock 16" wheels, but the paint has come off in parts and is starting to bubble in others. I had briefly fancied the idea of respraying them black but after some research here, have given up on that idea. So I'm now looking to replace my rims and tyres.

A little more research has given me the following answers and questions:
I like the width of the 205 tyres, but the offset must be +35 with those. Does this change with bigger wheels like 17's or 18's?

I'd prefer to know as much as possible rather then trusting to someone else to "know what they're doing". Is there anything else I should be looking out for?

Styling and weight are both considerations, and I don't really want to go much lower then the existing 205/50's as the ride is hard enough as it is without reducing the amount of rubber further. Does anyone have any suggestions for suitable wheels and tyres (stock silver GPX)?

I don't feel the need to put bigger wheels on, but I want to keep my options open when looking to buy. I expect to be able to afford to spend up to $2000 on the package once I sell my old car and pay off some debt, to give an idea on budget.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

woah sh*t tottaly missed this thread.

+35 offset will be set for a 8'' wide wheel. If your going for say a 17x7 then a +42 will be the set offset for the fto. If you go for 18's then you will need some sort of lower profile tyres to prevent scrubbing while turning or on humps - which is why most people prefer the 17's. If your after some dish then a 8'' wide wheel will provide some decent 3-5cm dish, a 7'' will be more flush with the lip.

2000 is a fair amount of money to spend on wheels. At most rim shops, packages go from $1200 for a set of 17's with tyres to $1800 for 18's with tyres. Research has come out with this being the average price from shop to shop.

Like most people will say, try to spend your money more on the tyres than the wheels themselves. But as tyres are a replaceable item, getting the wheels you prefer should be the priority i guess.

There is a thread on nissansilvia.com that has the weight of all common wheels rangine from sizes. Very handy page, i'll try to dig it up for you.

Hope that helps
