Space Saver Tyres

Post by mrx »

A quick run down on my day... (this will be a long post, so I apologise)

Leave for Sydney late morning (ex Newcastle) at around 11am. Going to Hurstville to look at a car (TX5 Ghia for my wife, since she resigned from her job with a company car & fuel - another story altogether) so arrive around 1.30am. Get something to eat, waiting for 2pm. Trying to get to Railway Street turns out to be somewhat of a trick due to no right turns, one way streets etc. Looking for signs to get back on track, go through an intersection and BANG - manage to hit one of those F*#king stupid little round things on the road. Did not see it at all as the road kind of veered to the right a little. What are they there for anyway? It has been hit that many times that it was all black and very hard to spot even if you know it is there! Drive around the corner, turn around to go back and decide to check the tyres. Of course, the front right is flat (but only on the bottom  )

Excellent, public holiday, Sydney mid afternoon, damaged tyre, space saver, 80km/h speed limit, have to get back to Newcastle. Who invented those things anyway? TAKE UP A COUPLE MORE INCHES AND GIVE ME A FULL SIZED TYRE!!!

It gets better...

Call the NRMA to find out if there are any tyre places around (looking for 205/40/17's could be hard anyhow - in Civic, not FTO). Give me the number for Milperra Tyres who are going to be open until 3 o'clock. Wife calls. The...ummmm...person who answers says that they will be shutting in 10 minutes (2 o'clock). My wife explains the situation (I am fitting the WASTE OF SPACE saver at the time) and he says "I'll give you 10 minutes". 5 minutes later we are ready to go and I call him to talk to him again. He tells me that, and I quote, "You should have left 5 minutes ago, mate". What was I meant to do - drive there on a flat tyre (or words to that effect). He then tells me to "Come back tomorrow". Are you listening? We are going to Newcastle this afternoon. End result - I leave him in no uncertain terms what I think of his customer service skills. We both hang up. I still have no new tyre.

From here, things improve somewhat...

A very helpful man at a Caltex servo manages to track down an auto wreckers who are open and sell me a rim and tyre (in very good condition too), and fits it for me, for $65. He had actually locked up and left but came back in to help me out! Check out car - not quite right (suspension nearly shot, had been lowered, and gear selector non existant. Changing gears was like holding a chopstick in a bucket of paint).

It just goes to show that the world is made up of all sorts of people.

Sorry for the long post - anyone else had experiences with those waste of space little round things in the boot?

wow... 8O
Atlest everyone is alive and well :)

Personnaly, i think space savers are a waste of time. Maybe around town, when your < 50ks away from your home it ok, but say if your in a situation like yours then your F*****.

If i ever go on a long trip again say to Melbourne, or Brisbane then i will seriously consider putting a proper spare into my boot!

Stupid Japs, always try to make stuff smaller, look at the latest bloody cameras, 5 mega pixels, and the size of 1/2 your bloody wallet... You can't even use the toy...

Well, what came to mind was when we did the great ocean road, followed the coast to Adelaide and then out to Clare Valley in two weeks - then drove home to Newcastle in one day! 16 and a half hours driving...madness. What if it had happened somewhere out past Hay? How far would you have to go to get something?

Oh, and the shot suspension & gear selector was in the TX5, therefore killing off the reason for going.

Must remember, Japan is a lot smaller than australia and town density is a lot higher =)

It's not that Japs are stupid, it's coz they don't need a full sized rim in the car to get themselves to a tyre dealer =P and why pay for something you don't need =)

Hahhahh but its the same stupid Japs that makes the car u love or we all love. Now heres a fine line between love & hate.

Anyway, i hate spacesaver, but its better then nothing, have u guys seen what they use in some of the new cars these days? Have a look at RX8 for example its just a "Tyres Fix Can" 8O .

Now you can thax god that its a spacesaver not a bloody can in the FTO

One of my mates used one of those tyre fix cans when he got a flat. It worked and he continued to run on that tyre for 2 weeks!

So your friend might be lucky with a minor puncher then rite? eg; nails in the tire.

I had a chunk of my tire ripped off by some metal crap on the freeway once, & those cans won't do any good with this kind of incident.

Personally I think a spacesaver tyre is a great idea. It provides more boot space, allows for bigger fuel tanks and provides a much better alternative to one of those spray cans.

It's there for emergency situations and it does its job well.

Yeah the puncture was only minor. As your mentioned, anything worse than that and the can would be useless.

http://www.drive.com.au/news/article.as ... 3RLTD.html

- i don't think any of us are stupid to think that the space saver is going to enable us to drive our vehicle without some limitations
- on our cars, if a front tyre goes flat, swap it with a rear wheel, and put the space saver on the rear
- remember it is onyl a temporary measure, so drive slowly, corner slowly and know that braking distance will be affected
- according to that article, space savers only cost between $135 and $260 and last about 450km
- if you are going on a long distance country drive, then it would make sense to take a full size spare if possible, or hope that you don't get a flat and stranded more than 500km from the nearest tyre shop (check tyre pressure of spares before you leave)
- get the tyre fixed/replaced ASAP

in my opinion, i prefer the space saver as it reduces car weight and gives me more cargo space. I have had to use it once in the past, and i was careful while driving my car until the next day when i got new tyres fitted

if you guys are so worried about it and dont need the extra space in your boot, get a full size spare and stop complaining :P

i recently had a minor puncture in my left front tyre, only noticed it when the tyre was flat the next morning. i pumped it up again to 40psi and it would take a whole day to go down to around 10psi, so it's obviously a very small puncture. I tried one of those tyre repair cans and now it only loses about 10 psi per day. moral of the story is that these cans should also only be used as a temporary measure, BUT im gonna see how long i can last, i just need to check my pressure everyday or 2, i wanna see if i can last about a month at which time front tyres are due to be replaced anyway

even for bigger punctures i think it serves a purpose, which is to get your tyre inflated enough to drive you to the nearest tyre shop - saves you from changing to the spare if you have a tyre shop close by and you want to change tyre straight away

obviously a big gash or chunk out of your tyre is different story

the Royal Auto magazine from RACV has a roadtest on TUST (Temp use spare tyre) and warned against its use because they do remarkably compromise handling in extreme conditions...

frankly i'd rather pull over and wait for RACV to come and replace my tyres than using one of those suckers and risk my life / others on the road...

you might as well get rid of your space saver and lose some weight off your car then :P

so it would be a huge inconvenience for you to get a flat anywhere, actually those tyre repair in a can things are pretty decent for small punctures.. im still on mine actually and ive hit speeds over 120 with no hassles... its not losing more pressure than a normal tyre would too now, which is amazing
