Gearbox not changing down to 2nd

Post by cp75 »

Hi guys

I have had a 95 GPX for a couple of years now and haven’t had to much go wrong, the car still runs quit well but in automatic mode it will not change down to second gear it just stays in third until its ready to go into first. If I try to accelerate hard in third it will change down but if it is in third and I accelerate slowly it will try to pull away in third. I can change it down to second in trip mode without a problem, and there are no lights on the panel. Has anyone had this problem or tell me how to fix this?

Thanks

That sounds about right to me. When you floor it the box will kick down into second but if you putter away like an old lady it stays in old lady gears. I tend to drop it into second manually if I know I am coming up to a stream of slow traffic because of that reason.

Thanks for your reply Storm. it just seams odd that when the car is slowing down it will go 4-3-1 without ever changing to 2nd. i'm gona do an oil change on the gearbox, was also thinking bout looking at the input and output sensors. is there any guide or advice on cleaning/testing them?

If you run a diagnostics check you can read any gearbox codes of the flashing N on the dash. FTOOC site has the codes in it's grease monkey section but I dont know if you will be able to access them.

The only time mine drops to second is if I am going down a sttep hill with my foot off the throttle and it drops to second for added engine braking. First time it did it I about sh*t myself

cp75 your car sounds totally normal but do a flush anyway as it never hurts

mine only dropped to second if you put foot to floor say doing 50kph etc then it will kick back to second, and never dropped into second while slowing down ie 4-3-1 :D as storm said would only do this if going down hill but you would use tip then anyway ;)

The VIP speaks the truth... no need for the car to change down to 2nd on deceleration

Yep, i can vouch that its completely normal. My previous car, lancer 98 mr had the same tiptronic INVECS transmission did the exact same thing. It'll only drop down to 2nd if you want it to get somewhere quick i.e slam the accelerator. Otherwise it'll stay in 3rd to save on petrol. Quite an good system :thumleft:
