Bro, I hope you are fuckin kidding! I am glad it isn't me who is going to have to pay that bill... May I ask what your budget is? And do they know what it is? I hate to say it, but if there are no hours on the card and the job is done under budget, I think those bastards are gunna fudge the figures to ream you...

I am really feeling sorry for you mate. I agree with what you said in the other thread, do it yourself...

Personally, on any major work like this i would be in there everyday and keeping a log of how much work was going on

Oh yh so true mate but didn't you have to fabricate the parts and figure out how to do it mate. You have done all that for me and the guy reckoned he could have it done in 10 days.
What is left 2 do!! Braided turbo lines, front actuator, wiring looms, put clutch pedal and clutch line in, put motor in, hook up all old lines and wiring loom, intercooler piping that is all.

you make it sound so easy .. :P go get it & do it yourself ;) lol

It all depends if they're actually capable of doing the work in the timeframe that you want it done.

Things to consider
- If they're the best shop in Darwin .. how far are you going to have to go to get another shop to do the work?
- You're going to look like a tool if you take it home to do yourself & end up having to take it back in again
- Do you know how to do any of it yourself / willing to spend the time to learn?
- Are you prepared to leave it there for the next couple of months as long as the work gets done?

Call Fair Trading tomorrow .. the staff there know what they're talking about & can tell you what your options are ..

Get copies of the work log (take pics on your phone if you need to)
If they haven't got any hours marked on it so far, then legally I'm sure it would mean that they haven't done any of the work.
As FTOEvo said, it's most likely they will just fudge the figures & rape you with the invoicing later.

yeah, it's bullshit mate.. these places don't seem to realise how important people's cars are to them & how much they're anticipating the day when it's all done & they can drive it home (hopefully without incident)..

If they've got cars sitting there that have been waiting a year or more though, then that should be indication enough .. you've been very patient with them so far, AFAIC ..

They just need to pull their fingers out.. & if they're understaffed, then they need to put on some more people.. maybe offer to work there for free on weekends or in your spare time or something so that you can learn how to do it & give them an extra pair of hands.. i dunno..

Dude, go get yourself a semi competent lawyer, tell them what's going on. Get them to send the workshop a letter demanding work stopped until they can supply you a satisfactory worklog.

If you get a freshly written work log back, then you will know they are bullshitting you.

Stop letting yourself be walked over. IMO $5k for an engine conversion isn't enough.

They say 10 days to do it all, 10 days x 8 hours in a day (since that is ALWAYS what a mechanic means when they say x days) x ~$90 per hour = $7200. THAT's JUST LABOUR!!! What about all of the Sundry items? I work for a software company that writes VMS for Ford, there are a sh*t load of other items they WILL charge you on top of the labour. Don't forget that mechanics time is usually GST EXCLUSIVE too!

Also, I hope that hourly rate isn't what they are charging you, but that is conservative over here for the decent garages...

You SHOULD have warning bells in your head fella, I feel for you, I really do. You ARE going to get screwed (because I guarantee you they won't keep it to 80 hours of work)!

If you aren't doing one yourself, or have friends/family doing it with/for you, an engine swap should never be attempted half heartedly (as in not planned). They are a huge job...

Good luck man, seriously, I do hope it all works out for you.

well simon they cant charge me anywear near like 3000 for labour as the motor is already built with a gearbox and everything on it. the gear selector cables have been changed that pedals have been changed just not clutch so they cant charge me for doing that. Their running out of the things to charge me for. Putting in motor and intercooler piping and then dyno run is really on what is left for them to do and oh the exhaust y pipe.

Agreed .. mostly.

Yes, they're acting like a normal workshop.. but as FTOEvolution said there is reason for warning bells.. the first should have been that they could do it in 10 days.. I can't even get my car serviced in 7 days even after leaving it there for a week & that was for a 1/2 hour / 1 hour job ..

I think it's a bit far to get a lawyer right now.. he just needs some advice on his options should things take a turn for the worse .. calling fair trading for advice is about as far as it needs to go right now..

It's just gonna piss off the workshop & screw his chances of being able to get it done in Darwin if he gets solicitors involved .. as Simon said, keep thorough logs of work being done & keep going back every day or so to check up on them.

Mitch isn't going into it blindly though, he's well aware of all the possibilities .. it's just a shame to see it happen..

Yeah, I don't like your chances .. but there's always next year.. & I don' think you're gonna have any problems having fun with the car without some Powercruise thing ;)

Honestly .. I don't know how anyone could do a major car project .. the anticipation just waiting for the car would be worse than death!
