how did we manage to make a simple thing like connecting a modem via Ethernet to router, then router to computer via Ethernet, into a 2 page thread including numerous diagrams and photos (both related and unrelated), and a new phone greeting?
just out of curiosity SILVERFISH, what do you do for work?

Yes all you need is a Ethernet cable, make sure it's a switch to hub one, NOT a crossover one. Shouldn't cost more than 5 bucks for a few metres.harry90 wrote:LOL![]()
So on a more serious note. All i need is one more ethernet cable and then i get rid of my usb one and im up and running ?

If you're only connecting one PC, you should be able to;
1st option.)
- Run USB Cable from Modem to PC & as long as you have the phone cable plugged into the modem as well you should be able to install the software / drivers & set up the modem using the Instructions etc
You should be able to use either the network cable or the USB cable from the Modem to PC though.
2nd option) Connecting multiple PC's
The ethernet out to the router is just for connecting multiple PC's ..
*edit* not just for connecting multiple PC's, I just mean it's not absolutely necessary if only connecting one PC (as above, you can use ethernet from modem to PC if you wanted)
*/edit*
You can ditch the USB cable altogether; (but you will need multiple extra ethernet cables depending on how many PC's you want to hook up);
Goes the way that Koolio's diagram showed
Ethernet from modem > PC
Ethernet from Modem to "In" port of router (if there is no "In" network port on the router (usually separate from the rest), just use any
Ethernet cable from router to any other PC's
Chuck USB cable in a drawer ..
i.) On the underside of the modem & router it might have listed a "Default IP Address:" e.g. http://192.168.0.1
- if both devices have the same default IP Address the might conflict - it's better to have a single Modem-Router unit all-in-one, but you can make do with what you have.
- If this is the case you will need to change the IP Address on one of the devices. Probably easiest to change the router - Disconnect the modem from PC & Power On router, connect to PC using network cable only, go to router web page e.g. http://192.168.0.1 & log in with the default admin password combination; usually;
un/ admin p/w: admin
you/n: admin p/w: password
you/n: admin p/w: default
or something like that - should say in instructions
in the network settings section (might need to search for it, you'll need to change the IP Address of the router to something else e.g. 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.2 or something
See how you go.. let us know if there are any probs.
Yeah i did it the first way you said. I am not completly dumb about this stuff, its just that when i try to install the drivers and software using the cd in the router box, it doesnt find the router being connected to the computer.

I've got a feeling that your ethernet card (ethernet port) on your computer is faulty.harry90 wrote:Alright guys. i am still having some problems. Has it ever been used before? Did it stop functioning?
Could of possible burnt out the port in a thunderstorm (thats why your using the usb port now, right?)
so you may have to replace the Ethernet card.

Try again then, you don't need drivers for something that is using Ethernet cable connection.harry90 wrote:mr-charisma wrote:seriously though, now that I'm over being a dick

Do you know your IP address (don't type it here)? Is your computer using a static IP? (I guess it is), if it is, change it to use DHCP when configuring your computers' networking settings to see the router. (this allows the router TO GIVE YOUR COMPUTER IT'S OWN IP ADDRESS).
If you have a static IP that isn''t in the range your router uses (usually 10.1.1.x or 192.168.0.x), your computer will never see the router.
Most cable companies give you a Modem that is preconfigured with an IP address, this must be entered into the ROUTER CONFIGURATION to give you internet connectivity. But this IP address is not the one to be used for conencting a PC to a router.
And above all else, NEVER USE THE SETUP CD! These are made for PC's that have never been connected to a network, and even then, are sh*t! Do it once, do it right, do it manually.
Never jump ahead of yourself, get network connectivity before panicking about no internet.
Straight up, these are a 5 minute job for people who know what they are doing, I used to be a mobile technician and would come across people who spent DAYS trying to get it working without being able to do it.
Call someone to do it to save some headaches.
Alternatively if you want someone to help you remotely, click this link -> https://secure.logmein.com/products/free/ and sign up for an account, don't use any important log in or password that you normally use, something that you don't mind giving someone temporarily so they can remotely access your machine.
You then install a simple program when prompted which allows you to remote control your PC from anywhere in the world (via an internet browser). For example, I offer to help you, so you would give me the username and password, then I log in from here and remotely attempt to fix your router issue...
Once fixed, uninstall the software that was installed and delete your logmein account (just in case you don't trust me for example).
It is up to you, but the offer is there, and I am confident that I can have you up and running in a few minutes (unless there is a hardware problem of course).

Theres nothing wrong with my ethernet port cos the lights flash when i plug the cable in and connect it. I think ill give it one more go tomorrow before calling optus and getting someone else to do it cos i wanted to do it myself to know how it was done.

Agreed with FTOEvolution there about everything he has said .. should be able to get up & running reading his post & mine ..harry90 wrote:Theres nothing wrong with my ethernet port cos the lights flash when i plug the cable in and connect it. I'll just add that you'll need to make sure that you have all the correct drivers for your network card installed.
Check network connections for active link & check device manager, & if any of the devices are showing as below i.e. Ethernet controller - find the right drivers & install them (Google for steps to get there & fix problem devices);

Flashing lights don't tell you whether the thing is working properly, just that data is attempting to move.harry90 wrote:Theres nothing wrong with my ethernet port cos the lights flash when i plug the cable in and connect it. The offer of remotely fixing it was so I could do it while you watch, the program has built in chat with the user and I could have told you what what was going on. But the offer was really only valid over the weekend while I was at home, can't do it while at work.

On my laptop i am able to connect to the router but there is no internet access. Packet data is being sent but not received. This is doing my head in. Can anyone suggest anything.
On the laptop the signal is strong and i am able to connect to it, but after putting the password in it says connection unsuccessfull but it is actually connected to the laptop but not the internet
