I never drop from 2nd to 1st either so I'm not putting it under any strain.
I would imagine its a censer, so will check fault codes, censers, wiring, plus the where it plus on to the gearbox, it mite have a crap connection :thumright:

It could be a safety feature (for the gearbox that is), I notice it too (before my gearbox had issues) that if I was giving it to it in first then second, then button off and change to third, it would hesitate then change.

I think the gearbox waits for the torque load to drop so that there are no transfers of force.

I believe it is very similar to automatic R33 Skylines and Stageas, whereas you notice a "cough" (the only way to explain it) when the vehicle has a big bore exhaust and the auto box is changing under load. I only noticed it after looking at some datalogging of the boost curve.. they seem to dump some more exhaust gas than normal to lower the torque load to save from mincing the gearbox internals.

That's my 2c theory anyways :)

Same. Ill change to 2nd from 3rd when turning a corner because 0-40km/hr is slow on 3rd gear(tip mode). Ill leave it in 1st for a takeoff but id never downshift to if when going 50k's.

In my fto id estimate 1st can reach around 50kmhr and 2nd all the way to 80-90.... But you'd be working it preety hard if you do it on a daily basis

If you're pushing it, it's more like 60-65 in 1st and almost 120 in second. That is, of course, if you're pushing it.

Yeah, Im assuming because some of the tips are 4 speed they do 90km in 2nd but my manual does about 120 in 2nd if pushed (only when the engines warm enough of course)

actually it does make sense that a 4 speed goes into 120km/hr territory as more range has to be covered by less number of gears.

what about a 5 speed tip???

I could very well be wrong, but I do believe the gearing is, for the most part, identical between all of the transmission types. Isn't it just the final drive gear ratio that differs between the 3?

Someone correct me?

my 5spd tips does 120 easy in 2nd, yeah there is really not much difference between the 4spd and 5spd, i know the ratios are still slightly different as u cannot use the 4spd parts on the 5spd gearbox, the only thing the engineer who looked over my 5spd tip box said there mite be a slighlty quicker pickup but nothin really in it,

5 spped as a bigger final gear and low crusing revs...obviously slight raio chnages all the way through...

on 100 what RPM u doing? IN a 4spd tip your sitting just under 3000rpm...my just the 5sp will be about 2500 and much nicer to cruise on.

Make sure you're using the right g'box oil..

Could be something simple like solenoids .. otherwise it could be more complicated .. Check the workshop manual & follow the troubleshooting steps..

Sorry dude but you misunderstood me I didn't mean that I change from 2nd to 1st I was talking about when I come to a complete stop while in 2nd gear and the car changes to 1st thats when I get a clunk sometimes. I believe it may have done it also when dropping from 3rd to 1st but I'm not sure.

Also one other odd thing that it does on occassion is I'll be in 3rd which feels a little laboured and then when I change to 4th the revs go up then down then back up and the car jerks around abit. This is with constant pressure on the accelerator not pushing it and changing at around 60kph on a 4spd Tip (doesn't do it if I'm pushing the car). I guess the best way to describe it is it feels like it goes into 4th back to 3rd and then back to 4th again even though it has only gone from 3rd to 4th. :? Could that have anything to do with the cams (I don't know if that makes sense as I don't really know about engines and I'm just guessing)

I'm going to change the trans fluid and filter and see if that improves it.

As mentioned earlier about a safety feature on the gear box, that it gives the trip a delay at hi revs when you change up, well yes I believe that is true, I was told some time ago by my mechanic that the sporty auto needs it to stop the stresses when changing. But as I said before this is not the problem, this only happens when ya cruising at about 3-4 thousand revs and you change from 2-3. Not when you are giving it a wupping. This delay is way longer than the safety feature delay.
Looks like I’ll have to keep the hammer down.
If the police stop me I’ll just say the gearbox dose not let me go slow, I’m sure they will understand. NOT. :hmm:

I've got a random theory on this one, and i'm happy if anyone shoots it down.

This used to happen to me when I first owned my Fto, and sometimes re-occurs after I've loaned my vehicle to a friend.

Might be just a coincidence but I figure it might have something to do with the fuzzy logic (if that's the right term) - the function of the sequential box (i've always associated tips with paddle shift) that learns your driving style.

In that case, my gearbox does the same thing and is on the way out for sure. Better start saving your pennies mate :)
