The missus and I have decided that we will be living in Aus in a couple of years time (nothing like a little forward preparation )
We are looking at either Melbourne or Gold Coast...
I'm in IT and she is an EA currently, which would be a better choice for work prospects (I know the job markets are crap atm, that is why we are holding off).
We are fully sick of NZ's climate tbqh, hence why we were thinking about Gold Coast. But what is Melbourne like? I know it is hot in summer, but what about winter?
In all likelihood I will have my car still when I come over, are there any good contacts for trans tasman shipping that someone can put me onto?
i've lived in both and they're both very different places to live.
WAY more jobs in melbourne.
gold coast is pretty relaxed and nice weather but maybe a bit unbearable in summer. i like the people up there. theyre really chilled.
melbourne has the most annoying weather in world. described as having "4 seasons in one day". good community here though. great car scene. great night life in the city if you like going out

Melbourne is very much like a massive chch. They have great restaraunts, good shopping. I do really like melb, but i certainly most certainly would never live there. Too much traffic, too many people who want to stab you etc
Gold coast/brisbane is hot, im not gonna lie but in saying that its not unbearable and chics were some pretty skimpy clothes whens it that hot lol.
I personally wouldnt live anywhere else in au but thats just me. i hated beaches when i lived in nz and really didnt see the big eal..... Now i am there almost every weekend. The negatives of here though is because everything is so laid back, dont exect anything to be done in hurry.....its really shocking but they are slowly getting better.

I love and miss Christchurch, is Melbourne as flat?
It is the winters' that we are trying to escape with the missus being from a tropical country, she gets sick in the cold regularly here.
What sort of weekly rent would you have to pay in the Melbourne CBD for a 2BR apartment of decent size?
Jobs aren't an issue for me in either place as my old boss is mates with the security/surveillance managers at Crown and Jupiters, so if I can't get back into IT in Australia, I can always pick back up on one of those jobs that are just far too much fun to be legal (I love PTZ cameras )

Im not sure on the flatness, but rent will be huge in the MELB cbd. Rent in brissy/gc will be way cheaper but probably more jobs in melb

Sydney vs Melbourne (brisbane/gold coast is no contest!) lol
In the end it comes down to what you're used to. If you like things at a faster pace, go to Melbourne. Although there's a lot of older looking architecture in Melbourne, it gives it a nice unique feel. I remember when I've been down there, I'll be sitting having breakfast on a busy melbourne street at a cafe but it'll still feel relaxed cos of the way the buildings and roads are.
If you prefer somewhere a bit more laid back then probably Gold Coast. All depends on what kind of lifestyle you've been living so far.
I have cousins in Canberra who think Sydney is way too busy and Canberra is the perfect place to live. Everybody's heart lies in the environment they grew up in, regardless of what anybody else says

Mate anywhere you go in oz money will be better as will opportunity's, but believe me you will really miss NZ weather just wait till summer in oz in f&^king insane either 40+ and dry as hell or mid 30's and you are sweating before you even get outside
but in all honesty because of opportunity it is a better place to live

to be honest....ive lived in sydney nearly all of my life and i quite like it here.....as its where i grew up.
Recently though i went holidaying up on the gold coast and for that 1 week i was there i really got into life up there and can even see myself living there....everyone is different, but if you can get work up there then do it.....

Melbourne's the only other city I'd considering living in australia, other than brisbane/gold coast. Surfers paradise part of goldie is a bit meh, a lot of leb's in hektic wrx's and wanks in their v8's. Has an awesome car scene though, and amazing beaches, especially if you head further towards greenmount.
I've got a mate working for IBM down the coast atm and he's loving it everyday. The goldcoast or even brisbane for that matter won't have near as many jobs on offer than melbourne, but you have to factor in the cost of livingin melbourne is quite expensive as well. Goodluck with your choice mate, and australia welcomes another refugee
