Received this today on work emails - Anybody able to confirm this somehow?

NEWS RELEASE
DRIVERS AND SAFETY WINNERS FROM CHANGES TO DEMERIT POINT SCHEME

Minister for Roads Michael Daley today announced changes to the current demerit point scheme to make the system fairer for motorists and safer for everyone using our roads.
Mr Daley said lower level speeding offences would now be defined in 10kmh bands to better reflect advice about speeding and road safety and align them more closely with speed zones.
The lowest range offence would now only incur one demerit point, rather than the current three.
â€œDrivers have expressed their frustration at the high number of points lost for only doing a few kilometres over the speed limit.
â€œThere is no such thing as safe speeding, but we acknowledge the system could be fairer which is why we are lowering the number of points for the lowest range speeding offences,â€

This was on 9 news last week, so, I'd say yes, confirmed.

BUT

Has it actually now been implemented, or has this email been colorfully embelished about the 'propsed' changes

The Minister for Roads, Michael Daley, has recently announced that P2 drivers will now lose 4 points (up from 3) for all speeding offences. In the same press release, he also announces that full licence holders will now only lose 1 point for speeding offences up to 10 km/h over the limit â€“ double standards!

Hi,

I refer to Michael Daley MPâ€™s news release entitled Drivers and Safety Winners From Changes To Demerit Point Scheme dated Monday 2 March 2009.

I specifically note the statement â€œthe message doesnâ€™t seem to be getting through to P2 drivers so to address speeding among this group, weâ€™re increasing demerit points for speeding up to 30 kmh over the limit from three points to fourâ€

It is definately hypocritical that they make different laws for difference license holders. The guys point is definately valid and hopefully a change will be made.

of course they do. Young driver fatalities way out number any other age bracket......why?

2 Reasons
1) A huge majority of males think they are bullet proof during their teens
2) EXPERIENCE

It is more dangerous for a P2 driver to exceed the speed limit by less than 10 km/h, in comparison to a full licence holder.

YES, why? experience FFS

As a P2 driver, I feel that the new changes are hypocritical, unfair and discriminatory. I demand a full and detailed justification as to why you feel these changes necessary.

Lifes unfair....get over it and because your so stupid as to even ask about the above, im afraid your too stupid to understand the reasoning

well its great to see that they are finally going to do this

I have been done 4 times for speed 3 of them have been low speed and three points each hit

but that is also over a long time and a lot of Ks (over 1000000Ks total car and truck) so I am happy about the change

as for the P's they should look at the history of the driver ie if they have done advanced driving then hey should get a better chance less points per fine untill they are on full's.

In that e-mail this was said of young drivers -"over-represented in speed-related fatal crashes"- this obviously referring to the amount of provisional drivers involved in fatal crashes compared to the amount of open class drivers.
Now i do believe that experience definatly comes into play, but i also think that the points system should be the same for all drivers, considering p platers and open lisence holders have different amounts of points attached to their lisences.
Having a provisional lisence is exactly that... your on a probationary period where you have less points than an open class driver does, meaning you can lose your lisence a lot easier than an open class driver already. Why make it easier for someone to lose their lisence when they already have a lot less points to lose in the first place? bit of a kick in the nuts i think.

Completely agree with everything written.

If you're a P2 license holder and you don't speed, then why be worried?

Suffer the consequences for your actions, it's up to each individual to choose what those actions are at any given period of time.

It can't be said for all, but how many P plater vehicles are involved in illegal street drags?
Also traffic light take offs (I can think of 1 big one...I'm sure most know who)
If the P platers are stupid enough to do this, then they deserve to lose there liscence, learn from experience.

As said, does not apply to all, but that's what happens when to many inconsiderate people spoil the whole experience.

I personally think that males having a higher premium on insurance is more discriminatory over a lose of points with an inexperienced noob.

Lets not also forget those P platers being involved in accidents increase insurance cost further to..

/end rant.

sure we are P platers who are inexperienced, hence why we only are granted 4 points to endure with, why make it even harder to sustain those 4 points?

Don't speed, points sustained.

I honesltly dont see the issue.

Is it unfair that L and P platers cant drink? and must keep a 0 lvl blood alcohol, whilst there is a minor allowance for full liscnece drivers?

Whilst you should never drink and drive what so ever, it stands to reason therefore, you should also not speed...

if you do, prepare to be whipped.

it's true if you speed then your going to get fined and all that, but why do they make it so a p plater has 4 points and loses 4 if they get caught speeding at 10ks over and yet an open lisence holder who is acting up doing the same speed as a p plater and come from the pub after work with 2 drinks under their belt only lose 1 point.
The sober p plater with less experience going 10ks over the limit is a lot more in control than a open lisence holder doing 10ks over the limit after 2 drinks... the points scheme should be the same for drivers accross the board... as i said before p platers have 4 points for a reason, they r on a probationary period... its crap that they can lose their lisence in one go by comming down a hill and not realising they crept up to 65 in a 60 zone.

If p platers lose 4 points for speeding then open drivers should lose 4 points aswell, the law shouldnt discriminate based on what colour your lisence is.

The point is that 4 points is instant loss of lisence for an offense that everyone commits every day.
