Hi guys, I just bought a 98 Silver FTO, freshly imported and complied a few months back. It's 100% stock with a few new parts it needed for compliance, eg new cat, oil, fuel and air filter, but these are all stock as well.
Being 17 and only just having gotten my P's, I don't really have much more to spend. I have probably $600 and am wondering what you guys suggest would be the best cheap(ish) mod to put on it. I know that there are plenty of threads regarding mods but I just don't know what to do first.
I have looked at extractors, new air filters, cold air intakes etc, but I don't know what to do first. I guess I'm looking for something that will increase my power as much as possible...

the best and first mod you should do to get more power is an advanced driving course
after that save some more cash then do as you said extractors, new air filters, cold air intakes and so on.

Did it and loved it, best money ever spent for my cars.
pending that, since you've had to replace all those parts, no point spending money once again to replace them with performance parts, yet.
A good option is a new straight through muffler.. new tips to match.
Otherwise if you want to get some good tunes do your audio system, they're a quick car on there own merit already!

Haha true, but nah I'm not really planning on acting like I'm some pro driver straight up just cause I can pass my P test. I'll definitely be taking it carefully until I get some more experience. Besides, I'm so in love with my FTO that I'm too scared to wreck it lol.

Don't think of it as a way to become a pro on the road or track, think of it more as a way to develop your skills to become a more safer and confident driver!
You will appreciate the car more, cause you will know how to 'use' it.

Forgive my lack of knowledge but I'm still in learning phase... Did you mean a straight through exhaust? I don't understand where the muffler actually comes in, and the difference between it and a cannon etc? Is a new, larger pipe really that necessary? I actually couldn't believe how good my stock exhaust sounds - would a custom exhaust really have a much bigger improvement?
Also, where can I get more info on the driving course?
sorry to hijack... hey aza, how hard do u push your car at that course? Ive got mine on hold because of my belt problems but providing u dont spend half the day in mivec smashing corners i should be ok
When I was at the track I found that I only hit mivec along straights and when you shift down to prepare for a corner youre back in the powerband.

Dan, first off i would look at getting a HKS superflow pod filter but if your on your "P" then make sure you get inclosed just so the boys wont give you a too hard time plus it will give added performance. Also while your there upgrade the whole induction pipe from from the pod to the intake manifold. Then with the money you have left get a 2.5inch exhaust, cat back with 1 x resonator, and then a muffler either traditional or cannon style

These are very good mods to begin with. Although you might choose to save the money instead as your on your p's and getting used to it, the last thing you need is more power....hone your driving skill and when your a little wiser start modding away, but its your decision...
Hmm, I tend to agree with you. I know I definitely need a lot more experience before I start getting too carried away. I guess I was just looking for some cheap and simple mods to give it that little bit more performance and efficiency, because I know the MIVEC tends to be a little sluggish in the lower rev ranges.
How many k's has it done?
honestly if you want performance and efficiency, but also for the car to last, then replace the parts that wear out and affect the car due to age.
o2 sensor
service injectors
engine flush
exhaust check *rust holes*
transmission service.
wheel balance and align
etc etc etc.
may sound conservative, but if these things aren't maintained, then you continue to lose performance and efficiency over time.
and though some of that stuff has been done, always good to have a mitsu expert do it

Basically all of the above are listed on the compliance certificate and the car has only been driven literally 100km's since compliance. I swear they went over the car with a fine tooth comb. Would you still recommend a Mitsu expert to look at it anyway? By the way, it's done just over 100 000kms

Hmmmm.......timing belt needs to be changed at 100 000km
I'd get that looked into before doing any mods.....or even a lot of driving for that matter.
I shouls ask what area you are in first
