ok so my rims are here on wednesday and i went around hobart to get some quotes on tyres!
anyways got an awesome deal on Goodyear F1 Eagle GSD3 215/35/18
for $255 fitted and balanced each...
but the thing is the load index on these tyres is 84..
the thingy on the inside of the door says it has to be 86 or above. now after reading the car bible for tyres the load index of 86 equates to being able to hold 2120kg...
now that is a tonne over what the car weighs initially so isnt that a bit excessive? plus the looad index decreases when u go over 210km/h which i definitely wont be doing... now the 84 load index is a holding capability of 2 tonnes that should be more than enough cos at most with three passengers its still going to weigh grossly say about 1750kg including full tank of fuel which is a over statement but better to over state then understate... plus at most i carry two passengers cos i hate having someone sit behind me.

so is it ok to get these cos its so cheap since they normally go for $420 per tyre!

plus they look the sex i want them bad!

need asap replies!

otherwise my other option is Falken FK452 for $275 per tyre
or Yokohama Parada Spec II 215/35/18 for $920 delivered but their load index is 84 as well...

well yes its fine to have them as of course car does not wiegh that much,
however they may go 'out of shape' with normal forces while driving on them however not likely unless shocks stuffed

but it is illegal they have to be same or higher load rating so if a cop or complience test notices off they come :roll:

yep ive been done for load rating....
lent my car to an old friend.... cop pulled him over for an rbt, and he went off at the cop, so the cop went crazy with the defects.
morale is.
you should be ok, if you dont start having a go at them..

wow, i probably could have worded that better, sugar has a massive hangover :(

Before changing my rims and tyres, i had those good year F1 tyres, front and back.

I found that they did go a little bit 'out of shape', well the rear ones did anyway, but nothing too dramatic.

^^^Im no expert when it comes to tyres but another thing to consider is how hard you like to corner in your FTO. You might have a gross weight of say 1600kg but during hard cornering you will load up the two outside wheels. I wouldn't be surprised if this added another 300kg to the outside two wheels.(weight transfer, enertia etc)

Hopefully somebody else will be able to shed some light on this.

Yeah like jamie said, weight transfer means that some wheels get more weight than others at certain times through a corner - not even driving hard, just normal everyday granny cruising.

The other thing is, in hard driving, I think under heavy braking / cornering, the weight is actually increased because you're pulling g's... like of course you're not pulling a lot, but it'd definitely be putting more load on the tyres.

Long and short is, I wouldn't take the risk. Tyres are the only thing that keep the car on the road; spend the extra money for the right ones!

Just go get some Federal 595SS's. $180 a tyre & just as good as a GSD3.

GSD3's are not the tyre they used to be anymore. They used to be made in Germany & be the ducks nuts of tyres, now they're made somewhere in Asia & the quality has dropped substantially.

well im not exactly going to tracks for racing!

but yeah that was a option...
dude at bob jane tyres said that going a bit under the load rating for a 16 inch rim is fine if your going up a few rim sizes... cos of the low profile tyre...
he was the store owner as well...
he said 84 on 18 inch rim is fine :s

what about falken fk452????

go the Federal 595SS's you dont have to be putting it on the track to get them, you still need good grip on the streets as well.

watch out for some road noise...but they grip awsome. Over 2000km the road noise has started to die down.

I have 595SS on the FTO and the better models on the line...for the money they are the best.

the load rating on the 225/35/18 Federal SS595 is only 83!
and on the 215 its 84...

so theyre both to little :S

So unless someone agrees with the bob jane man
looks like ill be getting the falken 452 at $275 a tyre balanced and fitted...

but if they do agree mite buy the Goodyears if not made in asia...

im doing this tomorrow (monday) so dont hesitate to voice your knowledge please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try maxxis 225/35R18 they have 87 rating...... and if you can find some let me know cause i need some desperately too

Read the tyre allowance list on the inside of my glovebox, read that minimum load rating to be 80 or 'S'.
So, anything above that should be acceptable...
